08-31-2021 7AM Caldor Fire Incident Update

        Size: 191,607 Containment: 15%

        Situation Summary:

Overnight fire activity remained active throughout the northeastern and eastern areas of the fire due to poor humidity recovery. Crown fire runs and ember casting remained active covering distances of up to three quarters of a mile. Lower elevations of the fire saw strong down canyon winds that tested control lines in Divisions A and D. The current red flag warning remains in effect through 11:00 p.m. on 9/1/21.

To better provide public and firefighter safety due to extreme fire conditions throughout Northern California, and strained firefighter resources throughout the Country, the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region is announcing a temporary closure of nine National Forests. This closure will be effective on August 22, 2021, at 11:59 p.m. through September 6, 2021, at 11:59 p.m. The closure order can be found at https://tinyurl.com/USFSClosure.

So they have large pumps and pump lake water uphill and out of giant hose nozzles.

Would this help save trees at kirkwood?
They used the snow making blowers at sierra at Tahoe. I would think kirkwood too.

This fire is well on it's way to NV. Thanks USFS!

They showed a snow making machine at Sierra Tahoe on the news last night blowing water up the hill towards spot fires. I think at Sierra they pipe water down from Lower Echo Lake.

Seems there would be a way to mount those on tanker trucks that mix fire retardant and pump it to a similar nozzle, and use them along highways. They could keep rotating them to water sources.

Meh. They'll probably say they don't have the money.

Flight radar looks like there are helicopters dropping water on the fire near Kirkwood today.

Looks like 4 helicopters. Tanker 911 just took off from McLennan.

Thats a really cool site. Flight paths look like the helicopters are refilling at Silver Lake. Hope they continue all day and are able to stamp it out good.

Those pilots are amazing. Praying for their safety.

                        Amen!

I am praying we make it out of this fire without (further*) death.

There are no deaths officially associated with the Caldor Fire as of yet, and they are appropriately not counting Officer Harminder Grewal's death as part of the fire event, but he was driving up to assist with the efforts when he was killed, and as such I feel should be honored.

A Galt police officer who was involved in a vehicle crash last weekend as he and a partner were traveling to assist with the Caldor Fire has died, the department announced Friday morning.

Officer Harminder Grewal died Thursday evening following a head-on collision Sunday morning on Highway 99, the Galt Police Department said in a social media post.

Grewal had been hospitalized in intensive care since the incident, which also killed the driver of the other involved vehicle, identified as Manjot Singh Thind, 25, of Manteca.

Grewal's partner, Officer Kapri Herrera, also suffered serious injuries and was in an ICU in "critical, but stable condition," the department said in an update earlier this week.

Grewal, a 2 1/2-year department veteran, is survived by his mother, father and brother, the Police Department said.

"He made the ultimate sacrifice while performing his duties as a public servant, responding to danger," the department wrote in a statement. "Officer Grewal took pride in serving his community and his work ethic was contagious to all who worked with him. His service to our community will never be forgotten."

The Police Department said a procession Friday from Elk Grove to Lodi along southbound Highway 99 will begin at about 10 a.m.

The deadly crash happened around 4:30 a.m. Sunday near Dillard Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A Dodge Ram pickup truck heading southbound hit the center median, broke through a barrier and struck Grewal and Herrera's patrol vehicle, which was traveling about 70 mph, the CHP said. The two officers had to be extricated from the vehicle.

                              Now don't I feel silly.

Your point is well made - thank you. The Dixie fire is still a serious problem: burned well over three-quarters of a million acres, only 48% contained and has been burning since July 13, 2021... and sadly many other serious active fires along with some new fires since the start of the Caldor are problematic.
