Question about trap gun selections

Not doing well with moss500 in the trap field when I met this guy who handed me his Ithaca 500 by SKB. The balance is great! The problem of my moss500 is that the center of gravity is far down the barrel and gradually wears off my left arm. I couldn't follow the bird well with moss500.

The problem is this Ithaca gun is hard to get after some research. Could anyone recommend something similar to this Ithaca 500 with great balance, under $800? How about Ithaca 37? It is kind of cheap but I don't know if it is a good balanced trap gun.

I just bought a Browning BPS Trap gun, can't tell you how it shoots yet it's still in ten day wait jail but it's in your price range. I looked at the new Winchester SXP trap guns not real pricey under $500 but light.

The 37 is uber light...make it a great bird gun, but not much of a trap gun.

The Ithaca 500, or any O/U by SKB, are considered good values. Gunbroker always has some. That or a Miroku (makers of the Browning Citori) are hard to be on a value scale.

Look into a Weatherby Orion...its the same gun as the Ithaca (SKB) 500/ 600...made by SKB for Weatherby. Keep looking as they do come up close to your price range at times.

For thr Ithaca 37....look into the Browning BPS. Again, same gun and Browning does a better job at balancing their guns....its still is a pump so don't expect it to balance like a decent quality O/U

Now that I have learned to shoot trap relatively well.
I like the Browning BT99 with an adjustable height 1 inch rib. Day Glow front sight.

It's a bit old school. Yet it works well for me.

It is a good gun with a competitive price. But it is a single shot gun, not for skeet shooting. I don't want to spend another couple hundred dollars for another skeet gun.

OP, if you can trap a front-heavy Mossberg 500 well, I have a feeling you would enjoy even more with a balance O/U.

The Franchi Instinct L can be had for $1k -- Made in Italy, came with 7-years warranty, and is a very balance shotgun for the money.

I have one and I love it. IIRC, the Franchi company is now a division of Benelli, which is under the Beretta umbrella.

Keep us posted on that. Seems like a god solution if one is willing to run a pump. I know the field BPS's are pretty heavy (good for targets). The BPS trap switch for singles sounds like a winner.

Just for the record...a lot of folks not fully indoctrinated in clay games call everything trap, or everything skeet. Or shooting the skeets (targets) in a game of trap.

But if one wants to shoot both genuine venues with one gun, a "field" or "sporting" are your best bets. Dedicated trap guns aren't very good cross-overs.
