    VEPR 12 Laws

I tried searching the last 75 days and it didn't answer my questions.

Atlantic has some, I will be buying one tomorrow. My question is the law, I think I read somewhere I couldn't attach a 10 rounds without swapping out some other part for an American made part? Maybe it was FUD but I thought I would ask.

Also, Carolina sporting mentions there are (2) kinds of VEPR-12's. One where you can take the stock off (and replace it with a different one), and one where you cannot remove the stock. Is this true and what the hell?

Anything else pertaining to the do's and don'ts that new VEPR owners should be made aware of? Thank you in advance.

    Federal laws [18 USC 922(r)]...
An imported shotgun can not have an ammo capacity of more than 5 rounds or have certain features (pistol grip, etc).
    Therefore...
If you want to increase the ammo capacity to greater than 5 rounds and/or of certain features, you will need to replace enough foreign made parts with USA made parts so that it is no longer considered an imported firearm.

The rear trunnion is different, which effects the ability to accept/use certain types of shoulder stocks.

In order to be CA legal...
... It must always have a maglock installed on it.
... It can not have a folding/extending shoulder stock and a pistol grip or a vertical grip of any kind.

Is there a consensus on countable parts? The interwebz sure does have several different numbers for this gun.

I recently purchased one from atlantic firearms. I guess it's best to leave it stock to be California legal. If the folding is welded, can install a pistol grip, correct?

Correct, as long as the stock is not adjustable, you can have a pistol grip on the shotgun. Also make sure it has a maglock installed as well. That's the biggy.

The gun can have 10 or less imported parts to stay 922 compliant. If you only use the included Molot 5-round magazine, you don't need to worry about it. But who buys a Vepr 12 to run 5-round mags? If you want to use the SGM 10-rounders or the MUCH nicer CSSPEC 8-rounders, then you have to do a little work on the shotgun. Fortunately, making the gun 922 compliant can easily be done at Carolina Shooters Supply for $100.

            Get their:
            - Gas Piston PUC - $19
            - Modified Trigger Group - $45
            - Pistol Grip of Your Choice - $20
            - JTE Performance Power Hammer Spring - $10 (doesn't count as a 922 part, but is a nice upgrade)

When used with your USA mags (which count as 3 parts), you're good-to-go.

Make sure you buy USA made VEPR-12 magazines and not Saiga-12 magazines/drums.
The two platforms use different magazines/drums that are not compatible.

Follow the charts for rules with shotguns in CA.

Its easy to err on replacing more the min to be safe. The new magazine itself counts as a few parts. The gas piston is a snap / easy / cheap.

I also replaced my stock and handguard with American made. I wanted to anyway as I wanted wood. So I found US made wood ones (from rhineland and ironwood).

Plus you might need the USA made parts for the count.

Oh yeah definitely. Both the SGM's and CSSPEC's are US made. I had the SGM 10-rounders and didn't like the fact they held 11 (even though the company said they were designed that way and they don't actually function/insert with 11 rounds in them). They also were a little harder to load than the metal CSSPEC 8-rounders that I currently have and prefer.

There are 8 and 10 round Molot magazines, yes they are the most expensive of them all but they are way nicer than CSSPEC, I own 6 CSSPEC mags and 8 + 10 round Molot.
Function, fit and finish, feel, loading, spring tension, weight etc etc... The best Vepr 12 mags in existence are Molot ones.

So the SGM ones are bunk I take it? Also, if i go with molot, then i def need to change out more parts to be compliant...Can anyone else confirm that the CSSPEC mags hold 11 rounds. Even if it wont function with 11, I would imagine the state wouldn't care and consider you in violation.

I agree they're the best, but Molot mags require 3 additional parts to be swapped out on the gun.
