    semi-auto LOPs

    Hi all,

After spending too much time in indoor ranges shooting pistols and/or shooting outdoors with ARs, I'm really learning about and liking shotguns. I'm pretty new to shotguns, but hope to get more into them from you all. I have a 590 that I probably enjoy too much, and am curious about semi-auto shotguns.

I've got relatively short arms (dress shirt length is 32.5 inches), and found that I had to get a shorter stock for my 590, as the standard was not comfortable. I think the LOP is now about 12.5 inches or so. I thought about the 930 (I like the ergos as a lefty), but the reach isn't a good fit for me.

Any suggestions for a a short LOP semi, with a focus on HD? Thanks.

Why not just cut it down? Also, it looks like ATI makes an adjustable stock for the 930 that looks like it's from an AR.

I thought the limitation was the buffer tube in a semi?

If you are going to shoot trap you may want to have the stock fitted to you.
If you are in the north bay area I know a wonderful guy who does that.

Hogue makes a shorter "tactical" stock. See if it fits a 930.

I have a 930 and also needed a shorter LOP, just could not shoot it comfortably.

I waited a year for this to come out, a little pricey but makes the 930 a joy to use now.

                    Good luck.

EDIT: They supply a new buffer tube and spring, hence the $$.

Magpul also makes stocks with adjustable spacers for 590's and 870's.

take a look at the Beretta 1301 Comp or Tactical. I know the Comp has a short LOP, so much so that many reviews complained that it was too short and they had to add the spacer. in addition, it has spacers to adjust for Cast-on for us lefties and you can swap the safety around as well. with just those two mods, it was perfect for me.

I don't know if the Tactical has the same LOP and the spacers, so research it if you are interested.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Are you looking for a tacticool shotgun or a sporting shotgun? If you are going tacticool, you can install an AR style telescopic stock on several current semi auto shotguns. If you are looking for a sporting shotgun for clays or hunting, you can either shorten the stock or, in some cases, find a youth stock. I have a wood youth stock for a Beretta 391 20g that I bought and used on my 391 12g when my stepson was a preteen. Be careful though, not all stocks can be cut down. You can also check GB and Ebay for new and/or replacement stocks with different LOPs and see what is commonly available.

Thanks for the info, and not reaming me for the newbie questions. I'm primarily looking for HD setups, but not sure I want to go the AR style stock.

Stuck in the PRoCA, I am planning on getting the Magpul stock and fore end for my 590, but am considering an auto. Maltese and Mbiker, thanks for the links - very useful and something to consider, as I do like the Mossy's control positions as a lefty. Although...Ke6guj, that Beretta looks really, really nice. Maybe I'll see if a local shop has one to get a better sense of how it'd be for me.

Looks like I have some HW to do... many thanks.

I will mention that as a left-handed person, it was very easy to run that 1301 in a 4day shotgun class. left trigger finger clears the safety and you do everything else with the support hand. having the loading port on the right side makes port-loading drills a snap when you can watch the round go in to the port without having to reach over/under the gun to find the port on the blind back side. the charging handle on the right lets you cycle it without having to move your firing hand and you can smack the bolt-close with the right hand as well.

many right-handed semis are just fine for a lefty as long as you can adjust the stock for cast-on instead of cast-off and if you can either reverse the safety or it is ambi like many of the mossbergs have.
