+1 on this but if you have trained with your weapon finding a sight picture will come second nature "if" you have the time

What would be a better suited shotgun for a 115lbs woman and a 10 year old 65lbs boy. HD gun also used for over night backpacking trips in black bear country? I prefer my 870 Marine Magnum, but as I stated earlier, it's a bit heavy for them to handle.
Does it have to be a shotgun? It sounded like your wife and kid don't really join you for clay shooting anyway given that you're looking at installing rifle sights. Why not go with a AR-15? They're lightweight, very easy to shoot, and you can even put a nice red-dot on to make it even easier to use. There are also carbon fiber receivers available, making them even lighter, but even steel carbines weigh in at around 6lbs. Their prices have also come down a lot, this is a pretty good time to get one. Get a few Pmags with UBBT installed on them from Thordsen Customs and the bullet button will become a non-issue.

Black bears aren't very big, load your AR-15 with heavy bullets (eg. 62gr and above) and you should be fine.

If I'm in your shoes though, I will try mounting your red dot sight on the shotgun first and see if that helps.

In order to get the point of aim correct I needed to press my cheek right down on the stock. That is fine for me, but for them in a stressful situation I don't like it. I thought the ghost rings would raise the sites up enough to be able to use them in a more natural position.

When you raised the rear in relation to the front sight you caused the gun to shoot high. Replace the front bead sight with a sight designed to match the level of the rear ghost ring.

          We love our AR's!

Never mind my nephew yelling in the background. He was pissed because his ear protection wasn't in after multiple times being told to leave it in.

I'm not opposed to the AR for hiking or HD, I built this just for those reasons. Shotgun just seamed like a more effective weapon system for close quarters and charging animals.

Looks like both your wife and kid can handle a AR well, I think you're better off sticking with those. If they don't enjoy shooting the shotgun, it won't be effective for them.

And heck, put a bayonet on your AR (the one with carry handle looked like it has a bayonet lug?) if it comes to eyeball-to-eyeball encounters with animals.
