    Ghost Ring Sites

Looking to put ghost ring sites on my wife's Mossberg 510. I see the receiver is already drilled and tapped, there's a small gold bead midway and a white bead at the end.
Should I buy a rail and mount the rear site to that? Does the white bead thread out and the new post thread in?
Any help and suggestions would be great.

BTW they're called "sights', not "sites".

Sounds like your barrel has a rib that it comes with a front and mid bead? You're better off mounting an optic such as a red dot on the shotgun instead of ghost rings. The pre-drilled holes are typically for scope mounts or a picatinny rail on which you can add compatible optics on.

Sites...sights? Geez, I knew that. Been a long day.
So a red dot? Not a big fan of those things on a rough and tumble shotgun. I have a Primary Arms micro I can try on it.

Ghost rings are great for slugs but depending on the purpose, you may be better off mounting a fiber optic on the front and calling it a day. For HD or competition, many(including myself) find the ghost ring too busy. I am quicker to pick up a fiber optic on a vent rib. Your eye naturally lines up on the vent rib and keeps a better sight picture of the surrounding area.

Most believe Ghost ring sights are useless but i find they serve a purpose even in a home defense type situation. Having only a small gold bead as a point of reference in the middle of the night isn't ideal. The ghost ring gives you a close to your eye point of reference even if the front sight post isn't dead center. It also gives me a more natural point of aim similar to iron sightes on any rifle you always grew up shooting, it tends to be more natural then a bead for me.

            Ghost Ring Sites

Here's what's going on. I put a ATI Scorpion adjustable stock on it because the recoil was too punishing for her and my son. Now that they're able to shoot it comfortably they're both having sighting problems. At 25' they're shooting over the top of a 5 gallon bucket. I picked it up and did the same thing. In order to get the point of aim correct I needed to press my cheek right down on the stock. That is fine for me, but for them in a stressful situation I don't like it. I thought the ghost rings would raise the sites up enough to be able to use them in a more natural position.

The problem with recoil was/is gun fit and or gun mount, the problem with not hitting a 5 gallon bucket at 25' is also gun fit and or gun mount.....at that distance the shooter should be able to look at 4" target, mount the shotgun and fire instantly without the use of any sights.....the SG should shoot where your looking

Shotgun shooting fundamentals are offen over looked in HD shotguns and replaced with add ons trying to fix fundamental problems.

Thank you for the reply...The problem with recoil was a feather weight gun designed for smaller people to be able to hold up shooting full load buckshot through it. Physics dictates the result. Fit, we're working on that and the fundamentals.
Since I've been shooting skeet, trap and 5 stand for close to 25 years, I'm pretty confident in my ability. This gun just doesn't shoulder properly, with either stock. If adding add-on's is a fix, then so be it.
Back to the original question, I'm thinking a raised ghost ring would help, just not sure on the actual components and mounting.

If you really want to install rifle type sights on your vent rib equipped shotgun, I think the only option might be the Williams UNIVERSAL VENT RIB SLUGGER Shotgun FireSight SET. It is adjustable for windage and elevation. You can find it here:

It is not ghost ring, looks more like a open rifle sight, which might work out to be better for close range shooting anyway.

Not a bad option really, if you want to shoot slugs later on, it could be pretty useful. And not very expensive either. Good luck and if you go with it, please post back and tell us how it works out for you.

There are some no-modification available (but not many), this one is just an example. (LPA SG7M1)

If you are interesting in having a gunsmith install some, you open up your opportunity.

add a rail and the rear sight you are good to go.

I'll look into those. Thanks again.
I really wish she didn't buy this particular shotgun. The 510 youth is slowly turning into a 500 tactical. Would've been easier to have just gone that route. But hey, at least she buys guns instead if shoes and purses...right?

Since you are already getting this impression, just "upgrade"/get rid of the 510 because it isn't a good fitting gun like what thefeeder said.

Ok, since the path we're on is heading this way, I might as well ask.
What would be a better suited shotgun for a 115lbs woman and a 10 year old 65lbs boy. HD gun also used for over night backpacking trips in black bear country? I prefer my 870 Marine Magnum, but as I stated earlier, it's a bit heavy for them to handle.

Get a Mossberg 590 and put a Bantam stock on it
That will shorten the pull so your wife will be able to mount it properly and shoot it without beating herself to death. I wouldn't get anything bigger than a 410 for the kid.
                            Good luck!

I think I'm splitting hairs too. The only way she'd miss at any distance in my house was if she was trying for a head shot. If she attempts to aim center mass, it'd be a upper chest/neck/head impact.
