nope, still legal to buy in CA as an AOW. the issue is that the transfer paperwork will probably not be completed by Jan1 and the NFA dealer wouldn't be able to complete the transfer as an SSE.

there are other "shotgun" AOWs on the market, Safety Harbor KEG12, Remington MCS, Witness Protection 870, etc, but they all will run into the same problem the Super SHorty has, lack of time to complete a Form 4.

you'd probably be best served making your own from a PG-only "cruiser" (after you got your tax stamp for it). right now eForm 1 applications are taking 1-3 months and that should be able to be completed by the end of the year. you wouldn't be buying a factory SSS but you could have something similar.

Jack, as far as converting a PG only shotgun to an AOW, would I have to be an FFL07 to do so or could I just file the paperwork with the ATF myself (I have a Firearms Trust too) and break out the hacksaw once I have tax stamp in hand? This would be a way around the SSE requirement, correct? First I have heard of this method, it sounds intriguing, especially since we all know that PG only shotguns can be bought for well under $400.00 but we would have to file for a $200.00 build tax stamp, rather than a $5.00 transfer tax stamp?

you don't need an 07 to do that. you (your trust) would file the Form 1 app (preferably the eForm 1 since those are taking a month or two instead of 6-9 months for a paper form).

Yes, its a $200 stamp instead of a $5 stamp, but you can do the work yourself and save money, and probably have something before the end of the year

We will be able to do this next year also, correct, no SSE involved? Could I take the barrel to a gunsmith for the cut and finish once I have the tax stamp in hand? Or would I have to do so myself?

I contacted EBR about a month ago and they said it was not possible to get all the paperwork finished. Apparently the feds are lagging on their end and it is taking longer than the typical 6 month approval process.

Sicarius, that is for a brand new AOW, which must be transferred to you via SSE, that's why EBR Works can longer do them.

The method I am discussing above with Jack is another way to get the same end result, it won't be a Serbu SS, but you can "manufacture" your own AOW using the method described above because there is no SSE involved. I may do so next year, but I already have an AOW I bought from EBR Works when they were doing them, I think mine was one of the last ones they sold.

Or you could buy an AR pistol this year via SSE, then apply for the eForm 1 and turn it into an AOW, allowing you to install a VFG and a SIG brace with no risk of breaking the gray area on the SIG Brace in California, thanks to our friends at Franklin Armory or better yet, buy one of their XO-AOWs. I may do the same as far as that too, it would be fun to buy a legal pseudo-SBR here too.

Yes. As long as you can legally make it. The kicker is in CA, in 2015, you won't be able to make a pump action handgun that is roster exempt.
