Don't take it too literally. Buckshot usually correlates with high powered loads. I'm sure he actually meant any high powered load such as nitro express, slugs, etc etc etc would suffice. I didn't run 50 rds of buckshot through mine for the break in period. I just ran Remington Nitro express I picked up at Phils Wholesale, cost effective and recoil is very similar if not the same as buckshot.

Of course shellslinger....just wanted to get some thinking going, too much misinformation on shotgun shells going around here.

When was the last time ya seen 2 3/4' Magnum shells? Kent has them back on the market...I can do without the diamond shot, but there they are.

Love my VEPR, but it is crying out for modifications.

Due to budget constraints I have to ignore her, but it is hard.

I am leaning toward a Choas rail so I can mount a laser, light and a foregrip.
Looking also to put some kind of red dot sight.

Probably will look at some kind of sling as well as additional mags. So far I only have the 5 rounder, but I will probably break down and get 4 to 5 10 rounders.

Already have a muzzle break and I modified a recoil pad to fit on the stock.

This is the only shotgun I have fired so far that I dont beat myself up with 3 inch shells. They are stout, but manageble.

Help me understand why buck shot is needed for break in.

good q. I was told the opposite for my saiga 12. Start low power. So I shot a bunch of AA winchester birdshot. Which worked / cycled fine.

A: I'm new to shotguns so it may just be the ammo I was running but I have one of these and 110 pound women were able to shoot birdshot with no problems.

I've made some higher power slugs but have not fired any yet. Hopefully this weekend.

I thought according to the shotgun flow chart, a forgrip on the Vepr 12 is illegal.

Only if it has a folding/extending stock.

The stock on the VEPR-12 sold by Atlantic Firearms is a fixed stock (folding stock that has been welded open, so that it can not fold).

I can understand the high load part....I don't understand the buck shot....Why does it matter what size shot is going down the barrel? Won't a a high load of something else be more cost affective for a break in ?

50 rounds of Suprema brand buckshot can be had for less then $30 (including tax) at Walmart. Which is roughly what 50 rounds of high brass birdshot costs there as well. So not exactly a prohibitive amount.

OP, not a big fan of mag-fed shotguns but congrats on your new acquisition.

But does the 50 round break in period a reliable way of making sure they can take low brass for the long term? I've heard a lot of complaints about VEPR's not liking low brass until several modifications are made.

If I'm able to get one someday soon I'd like to have an idea if I can (carefully) use it stock or if I'm going to have to drop another $200 and 3 hours and start another break in period.

I've fitted it with a Bushnell TRS-25, a Chaos Quad Rail Forend, Magpul AFG and a Warthog Muzzle Brake.



Thing eats shells like a champ and will fire it pretty much as fast as you can pull the trigger. Accurate too! I got these groups at 75 yards with some Fiocchi Low-Recoil Slugs and it was a smooth shoot all around! Granted I was shooting from a bench, but it was still pretty darn impressive for me.




Some observations -

-The gun is pretty darn heavy. I though my 24" bull barrel AR was heavy but this thing gives it a run for it's money. I'd definitely invest in a sling or something if you're planning to lug this thing around for a bit.

-The Chaos Quad rail is kind of a pain in the butt to be honest. The top part that covers the gas tube is hard fixed to the bottom half with 4 hex screws that aren't of very good quality. If you're like me and regularly clean your weapons, those hex screws are not going to last long, the tops are already starting to strip and I'm inclined to leave the rail top off and put the original gas tube cover back on.

-The SGM 10 rounders (if you end up going with them) take some breaking in, or at least mine did. They don't seem to fully "engage" into the gun without some rather forceful tapping. They seemed to get better the more I used them, but they're definitely very snug starting out.

Out of the box, I shot 50rds of Winchester AA 1145fps loads. No problems at all and I didn't even clean it before shooting. The recoil feels a lot more harsh than my Remington versamax and Mossberg 590. I'm thinking of getting the GK-01 brake to hopefully fix this.

You better not load more than 10, California law dictates that the extra round you loaded in incredibly dangerous to everyone around you.
