Lead fouling from shooting slugs?

Is it normal for smooth bore shotguns to get a lot of lead fouling after shooting non-plated slugs? I've never shot slugs through my shotgun until recently and noticed that the bronze brush pulled out a lot of silver color flakes. A look through the barrel shows a lot of lead fouling.

I shot around 50 slugs, Rio Star low recoil types, 1 1/8oz 1200 fps.

Thankfully the Benelli barrel is chrome plated so it wasn't too difficult to clean, still took me more time than say, after shooting birdshots (which don't come into contact with the barrel due to the wad).

Will shooting copper plated slugs reduce fouling or will it simply lead to copper fouling instead of lead fouling?

Lead fowling from rifled slugs is normal. Gives you new respect for the benefits of the plastic wad.

Depends on the slugs. Some are in sabots and should not foul at all. Others have direct contact with the bore and can leave traces of whatever material is contacting the bore.

yeah i think its normal, smooth bore jamming all lead rifled slug down the pipe, going to be some left behind.

Now if you wanna see some real bad leading that shouldn't happen, shoot some new thunderbolt .22lr from remington. worst ammo i have ever used its insane. instantly leads your .22lr barrels due to their change in bullet coating.

Thanks for the info, I thought it might be something wrong with the ammo but it sounded like this is the price you'll pay for shooting slugs.

My other order of copper plated slugs from Freedom Munitions just arrived, I'll see if shooting these helps.

Copper fouling isn't fun either.

iappi (a user here, I'm sure I'm mis-spelling his name) has some interesting info on his web page about using a wooden dowel, steel wool, and a power drill to get all kinds of fouling out of a shotgun.

I'm hoping that the copper will not foul like lead does because it is harder, I could be wrong, only 1 way to find out I suppose.

Thanks, I saw that. Pretty interesting, I might have to do that after this coming weekend. I have almost 2 cases of slugs, lead and copper plated ones. I'm wondering what my barrel will look like after shooting most of these.
