New 870 old shells ejecting problems

Ok today for mothers day, the wife wanted to shoot for the first time (rifles and shotty) I had a problem with some older shells cycling, ejecting. The shells are well about 20 years old still in the box (bird shot). I let the wife shoot the 870 for the first time both her and the gun. I put in 2 of the bird shot no problems then 2 00 buck (those she didnt like so well) no problems. Then my son wanted to shoot it. Loaded up 5 rounds, fired one shot, would not cycle. Removed the other 4 rounds gave it a quick look over found the safety had been pushed in. Loaded it up with 5 rounds and the same one shot no cycle. Cleared the shotty and this time loaded it with 5 of the new 00buck. No problems, well he could only take 3 shots I had to finish the last 2. So I put 3 rounds of the bird shot in no problems, did 6 rounds fired one shot and would not cycle. Cleared the shotty and loaded up 6 round of the 00buck not one problem. The one thing that was different from was the brass collar was very short as compared to the newer 00buck rounds.

So for the big ? is this something with the shells or the gun? Many years ago I never had a problem with these shells in my stevens 67. Not sure if I should be concerned with shells or gun. Any thoughts?

Check out this web site on how to polish the chamber of your 870, you should have no problems with it once you've done this:

BTW there are low recoil 00 buckshots, they recoil just like birdshots. I use them as both my wife and I shoot shotguns and use them for HD as well. If you let new shooters try full powered 00 buckshots, before they have correct gun mount and cheek weld, they'll not like it because they'll get beaten up by the recoil.

My buddy had a similar problem, that he cured by installing an extractor from a Wingmaster.

Apparently it is a common fix.

It's not the shells. The newer 870s, particularly the "express," have rough chambers and weak extraction. Polishing the chamber and installing a Wingmaster extractor sound like good solutions. But I've never tried them, I prefer to just buy older 870s. Newer isn't better in this case.

I just purchased a used 870 Express Super Mag but it looks like a newer model. Any way to check if my shotgun is the type that has these problems associated with it?

I recently went to TargetMasters to test it out and after a few shells, the 870 had a hard time getting the pump back after a shot. Had to pull the pump forward with a bit of force before being able to pull it back and get the shell out. First time shotgun owner so wasn't sure if that's common for pumps in general, shell issue, or gun issue.

            Was shooting Winchester Super X

Check for a rough chamber (you can use your finger nail, etc). If it's rough, polishing your gun's chamber should solve your problem. Installing a metal extractor would not hurt.

I'm a new shooter, and I experienced the same issue on a brand new Mossberg 590A1. Slide doesn't want to come back. Had to pull much harder to get the shell extracted. This only happens infrequently on 00 buckshots. I wonder what's going on.

Did you clean & lube prior to shooting the gun? Seem's a number of people do not, then have issues. Any gun that I buy (new or used) get's a thorough cleaning & lube before being fired. I also like to run the new guns a little on the wet side for the first couple range trips. I have bought a couple of new 870 express guns recently and neither have an issue. I did check the chambers prior to doing any paper work and they were both pretty smooth.

Tray a good cleaning and a little extra lube on on the rails next time out.

Shotty is the new short description for a shotgun. I cringe every time I see it. I'm still trying to get use to in myself. But, I'm Old School. Even Old School is hard for me to get use to using, and that's from the 80's

I've taken a photo of the chamber in the 870.

It's not shiny and polished but with the pad of my finger it feels smooth and my nail didn't experience any resistance from texture.

I've read that it might be the extractor. So that piece can be the cause of the pump slide being jammed and hard to slide back?

This is the upgrade extractor I read was the right one
