So I was just handed this Wingmaster...

...and I have my work cut out for me. Looks like someone tried to modify the stock to either make it lighter or to fit it to them better, and then they decided to spray paint it. Yeah.

So far I know it's a 1976 wingmaster, 12 gauge, 2 3/4 in chamber full choke barrel. Surface rust on the bolt and bore of the barrel, the guide in mag tube fell apart when I touched it, so that's gone.

What I plan on doing is getting new springs all around, new stocks and teach myself how to blue a firearm. A shotgun like this needs to be blued, preferably high polished blue. Nice stocks are needed, and then I'll just baby it and maybe use it for my upland hunts, keep the beretta for the waterfowl.

So, any idea how to get the damned spray paint off? I know, elbow grease, but what solvent will get it off so I can get it down to bare metal and start the bluing process? I

I'd focus on getting the parts you need to make it function before you put any elbow grease into it. Finding parts can be a PITA.

Not turning it into a hd gun as I have a 870 express for that. It really only needs a follower and stocks, function check shows no issues. Cycles like it should, I grabbed the follower and spring out of my express and it works good. Even dry it cycles smoother than my express. It is all gunked up, just needs a lot of tlc.

Yeah, spray paint. I'm really looking forward to trying to blue it myself, but if I screw it up royally, ha ha, I'll look into robar. I have heard good things.

Oh yeah! Check ebay ( I know, sorry) for stocks. A lot of nice ones on there, some very much ready for refinish buy in overall good shape. Seems a lot of people like to replace theirs with synthetic.

Spray paint try lacquer thinner, or try brake fluid. I believe it eats away car paint pretty quick. They also sell the graffiti remover at Home Depot or lowes.

Bubba continues to spraypaint, cut, bend, and disfigure his way through the world. And it is us who are left behind to pick up the pieces. I'd consider this project worth doing because a polished blue older Wingmaster with its characteristically slick action is a relic from the past that is worth saving. It is my preferred HD/SD boomer as well:

Citristrip will take the paint off that buttstock and metal without a great deal of elbow grease. It's also non-toxic and won't strip the skin off of you quite as fast as most other paint strippers. You'll still need to wear gloves and use it in a well ventilated area, though. I used it to take the Springfield stock crackle paint off an M1A stock, a job that it made surprisingly easy.

I don't think it'll take off the bluing, which might be a good or bad thing depending on what you find under the paint. In the worst case, it can be bead blasted and Parkerized; AI&P's JD McGuire (he posts here as "aippi") does that work and has some good before-and-after photos on his website here. He will be a very good source of parts and advice about the task you're taking on. Well done for trying to restore this 870! I have a 70's vintage Wingmaster that I have set up for serious social purposes, wouldn't give it up for all the new Remingtons in the factory.

Nice project. The Wingmasters from that period are considered to be some of the best put together pump guns in existence, probably only one upped by the Winchester model 12s of the +/- 1950's. I have a Wingmaster from the mid 70's, a Magnum, my firsts shot gun. It is as slick as any pump action can be. Nothing like hand fitting by people that clearly took pride in the product that they put out. Unfortunately, seems that is not the case now days. I will never part with mine. Definitely worth bring back. Have fun!!!
