I am fairly new to Browning shotguns and have just purchased a Citori 16 gauge with standard Invector choke tubes ( IC, Mod, F ). As I begin to research this shotgun, I have encountered several blogs about the lousy quality of this choke system. What say you? Is there a better after-market tube to try? Thanks...

Browning Invector quality?

According to Randy Wakeman, who seems to have done a fair amount of testing in this, the Browning Invector Plus choke tubes seems to be of a lower quality.
In the same article, he recommends Trulocks. Might be worth checking out. -
Thanks...FWIW, my shotgun uses the "standard" Invector tubes. Not the Plus system...According to Randy Wakeman, who seems to have done a fair amount of testing in this, the Browning Invector Plus choke tubes seems to be of a lower quality.

Congrats on the new shotgun! You might look at Briley chokes http://www.briley.com/browninginvectorchokes.aspx
I would also reccomend a visit to the 16ga Society http://www.16ga.com/forum/index.php Many folks on that board are proud owners of the Citori.Comment

the best thing to do is pattern your shotgun with the shells that you will be using.......then do it again with anther brand or load......then another, again and again
Truth of the matter is you can write a long report each day like Randy and have a different story to tell each and every day...one will end up recommending every known choke tube or disreguarding every choke based on the one load they used on that day
Now add in a different Browning every month.....you can write write-ups for years.
What do these write-ups mean to you, your shotgun and the brand of shell and load your using today....zip
Pattern your shotgun with your brand and load, try some different shells...its the only way ......and remember, good enough is good enough
btw...I have owned and still own many Brownings including 2 cit 16ga, shot invector and invector plus and the new choke system ....never bought another choke tube for brownings other then browningLast edited by Thefeeder; 05-09-2014, 10:24 PM.Comment

Good advice given above...
My experience, limited as it is, shows there is little difference from one brand to another. Gun + Load + Choke Constriction will make more of a difference than the brand of the choke. A Briley with an .020 constriction, a Trulock with an .020 constriction or a Carlsons with an .020 constriction will yield very little, if any, difference.
On the other hand, I do like extended chokes for a couple reasons.
1- They are easier to change.
2- It's easier to see what you have in the barrel."A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed"Comment

My Citori uses the original Invector chokes, its a 12gauge built in the late 80's. The original Invector chokes are interchangeable with Winchester Win-choke, Mossberg Acu-Choke, and Weatherby Multi-Choke, and were the most common system except Remington in the beginning of interchangeable chokes. I have not had any problems with mine. Its really about finding the right ammo and choke combo that throws the pattern you are looking for. When ever I see the other brand tubes at gun shows I pick them up, usually pretty cheap. I have measured them with a micrometer comparing them to the Browning Invectors, and sure enough they are all slightly smaller or bigger in constriction for each type (modified, full, IC, etc..) I will one day do some testing to find the best ones of the bunch for my gun and ammo combo. The invectors are shorter than the Investor Plus, and my guess that the longer chokes have some advantage, but it really may be in theory rather than practice, as chokes have been made to work effectively in all different length sense choke constrictions were invented. To answer your question. The Invectors will work fine, but you really need to spend some time patterning your gun and ammo combo. It will make you a better shooter when you have confidence that your gun is shooting where you are pointing and the pattern is reasonably effective. I bet your Citori 16 gauge is pretty nice gun. Probably slightly lighter than a 12, and that is a good thing. How about a picture? Good luck.
I just read the Wakeman articular on the Browning Invector plus tubes. First of all he does not measure them to see what the constriction really are in his tubes in comparison to what is published, second he should get a set of other tubes to make sure his are not just a bad lot. Otherwise decent analysis. He did remind me that one of the advantages of the invector plus guns is that they are back bored, which for the most part the general consensus is that it improves patterns. So it may be the combination of the back boring and longer choke that is suppose to improve the patterns with the Invector Plus guns.Last edited by wweigle; 05-10-2014, 6:12 PM.Comment

That is a beauty!!!! I have seen that model in 12 gauge and always thought that it looked like it would be very fast handling gun. A pheasant and Quail killer. The more I think about it I think a 16 gauge might just be the perfect shotgun. My 12 can get a little heavy by the end of the day. Very nice! I wonder if the Browning 16 gauges ever even came with the Invector Plus tubes if your gun is a 2010 model. That would lead me to believe that Browing was happy with the performance of the Invectors in the 16 gauge.Last edited by wweigle; 05-11-2014, 6:49 AM.Comment
