I took the advice of everyone on this thread and put on a 12" LOP stock that came with the thunder ranch mossy. I like it MUCH better. I intend to put a side saddle on there, coupled with a surefire G2.

As far as the light giving away your position, has anyone thought if the intruder would automatically assume you had a firearm? I would think they would be waiting for an unarmed guy with a flashlight to round a corner...not a guy with a mossberg that has a light on it...especially if you arent yelling aggressive statements..

(im skipping the laser...that definately lets them know your intentions if they should attempt to hurt you)

      This.

And firing from the hip? Really? Do you believe shotguns don't have to be aimed?

Get the uber reliable Surefire 200/600 lumen light from Optics Planet or Amazon. But make sure it will work with your particular model first.

You'd still be giving away your position however.
In a HD scenario you'd have your family behind you or at least someplace that's secure where you can account for them. An intruder would know to fire at the light source before being caught in the illumination and shot, and where would you and your family be in relation to that light source?

So, you're using a mall ninja, PG only shotgun for HD and want a laser/light combo because that's what Gecko45 would do. But, you don't want to spend a enough to buy a quality one. Hmmm, you might want to ask yourself "WHAT IS MY LIFE WORTH?" and reconsider your spending habits. Then, reassess your choice in personal protection tools and get something more appropriate. At least, put a stock on your shotgun so that you can use it properly.

            Light? yes. Laser? No.

If your not going to take HD seriously just don't do it, seriously ask your self tho. Are you mainly doing this for Facebook likes. Or actual home protection?

Buy a barrel clamp mount with a rail and mount a stream light or surefire and be done. About as cheap as you will get for HD use and stay seriously ready.

I already said I had put on my thunder ranch shortened LOP stock on the gun....And reanalyzed the need for a more dependable light. I had figured before that the light was secondary...but I know I might as well treat it as a base step in my HD.

Side note though...what in the hell are PG's on shotguns for then? Is there a real need for them...ever?

PG only shotguns? They provide us with entertainment in the form of videos posted on youtube.

I have seen a couple valid uses for PG only shotguns. Most are just novelty or for people who feel the need to look stupid at the range. But, for tight quarters like clearing under a house, a PG only shotgun is the preferred choice of those few people who are in the business of removing rattlesnakes and other dangerous pests. A PG and a folding stock are common for LE motorcycle officers. A PG with a stock can be easier to use for some and the only way someone with one arm can safely and comfortably shot a shotgun.

A home defense shotgun should have a light on it. Just my opinion. It's there if you need it. If you think it's going to give away your position, then don't use it. Better to have it and not need it and all that.

PG only shotguns...not my cup of tea. Perhaps they are practical for door breaching or something. But a standard PG with a full stock...comes down to personal preference IMO. I didn't think I was going to like the PG that came with my Benelli M4. But it's really grown on me. I like it just fine. Like the standard stock on my 870 too though.
