It's just the assault weapon PC. there is a separate section for semiautomatic shotguns, they can't have a pistol grip AND an adjustable stock, they can't have a detachable mag, and they have no limit on magazine capacity unlike the rifle section. However the normal mag laws still apply to the magazines themselves. There may be a bit more to the AW PC but that's what I remember off the top of my head.

Edit: Oh and I think folding stocks are a no go.... you may want to look into that...

Edit 2: since I posted the PC you can see folding stocks AND a pistol grip is a no go. Just saying.

No, you can't use a mag that holds more than 10 rounds. Check the flow chart.
You can't bug mags that hold more than 10 rounds in CA anyway.

I think you're the one who needs to check the flowchart. There is no mention of magazine capacity on the shotgun ban ID flowchart.

You can't buy mags, some people can. But that's an entirely separate issue.

You actually made me look it up............

30515. (a) Notwithstanding Section 30510, "assault weapon" also
                means any of the following:
                (1) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to
accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
                (A) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action
                of the weapon.
                (B) A thumbhole stock.
                (C) A folding or telescoping stock.
                (D) A grenade launcher or flare launcher.
                (E) A flash suppressor.
                (F) A forward pistol grip.
                (2) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has a fixed magazine
with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.
                (3) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has an overall length
                of less than 30 inches.
                (4) A semiautomatic pistol that has the capacity to accept a
detachable magazine and any one of the following:
                (A) A threaded barrel, capable of accepting a flash suppressor,
                forward handgrip, or silencer.
                (B) A second handgrip.
                (C) A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely
encircles, the barrel that allows the bearer to fire the weapon
without burning the bearer's hand, except a slide that encloses the
                barrel.
                (D) The capacity to accept a detachable magazine at some location
                outside of the pistol grip.
                (5) A semiautomatic pistol with a fixed magazine that has the
capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.
                (6) A semiautomatic shotgun that has both of the following:
                (A) A folding or telescoping stock.
                (B) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action
of the weapon, thumbhole stock, or vertical handgrip.
                (7) A semiautomatic shotgun that has the ability to accept a
                detachable magazine.
                (8) Any shotgun with a revolving cylinder.

                (b) The Legislature finds a significant public purpose in
exempting from the definition of "assault weapon" pistols that are
designed expressly for use in Olympic target shooting events.
Therefore, those pistols that are sanctioned by the International
Olympic Committee and by USA Shooting, the national governing body
for international shooting competition in the United States, and that
were used for Olympic target shooting purposes as of January 1,
2001, and that would otherwise fall within the definition of "assault
weapon" pursuant to this section are exempt, as provided in
                subdivision (c).

As you can see, rifles and shotguns are different.... A shotgun can have any capacity magazine you want, the magazine laws still apply to the magazine itself though.

So how hard is it to find magazines for these? They don't use standard saiga mags right?

                    Apparently.

It's kinda a moot point though since pretty much only crimminals can acquire magazines that hold more than ten rounds in this state.

They're not very hard to find and yes, they are different than Saiga mags.
Atlantic, Carolina Shooters Supply, Legeon USA, and many others carry both the Molot mags and after market mags(usually SGM).

Just read an article on the Vepr. The author preferred over the Saiga. He warned that you have to keep your optics away from the shell ejection port.

Thank you, I guess not everyone knows me. I still like to make people do their own work. I just put the idea in their head and let them sind the answer. It makes people learn, I'd rather teach then do for someone.

Ok, so I'm still trying to see what the big deal is with the VEPR S12. Most of that is off the shelf stuff and the top cover is easy enough to make.
At least with a standard S12 you can run 10's, 12's, 20 and 30 round drums and still make it look like the VEPR.
