I do agree with the light suggestion, whether mounted or handheld is up to you. Perhaps a butt cuff for even more rounds at the ready.

It is a nice gun thanks for sharing this picture. Wood stocks 870 is basically prefer for hunting because it is powerful and accurate. To make your gun in good condition, use Linseed oil for wood care and conditioning. You can get this oil any hardware or big box store.

The vent rib is what makes that gun attractive to me. We don't see that often enough.

How long is the extension and what did you chop down the barrel too?

Thanks for the great replies... sad to say, not my gun. Just something I helped a friend with... but I'll run the suggestions to him.

The gun started as a plain-jane 28" vent-rib 870, that was well used in the field, you can tell from the finish wear on the bolt. We cut the barrel down to 18.5", fiber-optic front, added the OEM extension and side-saddle. Refinished the whole thing in a tarditional park finish. Also cut the forearm to allow use of 6-shell side-saddle, then sand everything down & stain. The pic doesn't show it, but there's about 4 coats of Tung-oil on it.

I always like the look of traditional wood also... and I love the vent-rib barrel for the easy sighting. Chopping the barrel didn't seem to effect patterning much because we could easily get all 9 pellets from a "00" into a IDPA target at 15 yards using Federal FC rounds. My buddy was happy with it and it's just another cloest gun for him since his primary HD gun is a handgun.

So for those of you with old 870 that has seen its share of field work... you can turn it into a pretty nice blaster without throwing too much $$$ at it.

NewbieDave, when you added the extension how was the fitment of the included spring? I added a +2 extension from Remington and the included spring was far too long, it only allowed 4.5 shells in the tube before I started snipping it. I eventually cut enough off to allow 6 shells in the tube and its still strong enough to load them, I'm just curious if you had this issue as well?

The extension was all Remington OEM 2-rounds extensino from Brownells. The spring fitted fine without issue and allowed 6 rounds, did not have to cut spring.

You may want to check to see if there are dimples in your main tube which prevents the spring from compressing correctly.
