The only "mods" you might consider doing is getting a barrel that accepts screw in chokes. Otherwise, all the tacticool crap out there is just for mall ninjas and does not improve performance. In many cases, it actually is a liability. My experience with 500s dates back to hunting waterfowl with lead shot. Yea, I've been shooting 500s for the last 35 years or so.
Thank you! I'm so tired of the tactical lardasses AKA 'internet operators' with all of their overpriced junk hanging off their guns. Just keep it clean and shoot the damn gun... Most people just plink in the desert anyway - they don't even hunt and they most certainly don't use their guns for LEO/contractor purposes.

I've had a few Mossberg combos in my day...
for years they used to be $199 occasionally throughout the year on sale.
but I haven't seen prices like that on the combo versions for a little while.

if you have the one with the two barrels and the wood traditional rear stock and a Mossberg designed pistol grip. (I think nowadays they just put two barrels: a short riot style and a long duck hunting ventilated rib one)

you will soon learn that the pistol grip on the 12 gauge is just for fun/show, and a little bit of pain in the wrist.
to say accuracy suffers with the pistol grip on is an understatement.

I never had any problems with mine and I really did prefer the safety right on the top of the receiver where I can easily see it and push it on or off safe with my thumb.

some of those cheaper Chinese rebranded with American names )shotguns, coming into big 5 type stores have poor safety and slide release controls location / placement & design.

I had a girlfriend get me a watch once for about the same amount of money in the 80's but I would have preferred a shotgun.
she wanted me on time and I wanted to have fun.
with that meaning your girlfriend wants you to have fun in life,

        I'd say she's a keeper.

My recommendation: Buy yourself a shooting vest, one with a recoil pad on the shoulder. Then go clay shooting. You'll be hooked and end up like me, constantly scanning for deals on birdshots online.

Think I paid about $215 for mine from Big5 but hat was at least 6-8 years ago.

I think recent ads have them for the high 200 hundreds.

Yeah. I thought it got it for cheap lol it was on sale for 304, but i got another additional 10% off and thought that was a good deal.

Well, thanks a lot for the input guys. Im not gonna go mall ninja on it lol. I hear the stock forend wobbles a lot and other than that i dont think i want anything else on it just be able to go bang... maybe a heat shield too.

Thanks again guys i love CGN for the expertise/ knowledge of the great people here, nothing but good experience on this board. Thanks.

the Mossberg 500 has light weight going for it. that gives it an edge for SHTF use, should you ever have to carry the shotgun for distance. i'd keep it that way, and consider practical improvements after getting to know the shotgun at the range.

I love my Mossberg 500a Persuader. I really do recommend getting the persuader/590 action tube and 20" barrel. It is very handy and the 7+1 capacity is nice.
So I was driving home from the range and I noticed that the scent of warm steel, burnt gunpowder and lukewarm coffee combined and smelled oddly of... Peanut butter?! Man, the Hoppe's is going to my head.

I wouldnt be a good idea to confess that your gf gave you a shotgun in a public forum.

I have a different shotgun, but only mod other than stock replacement I felt would be worth it is to replace the plastic follower.

I have two one with wood furniture and one with the polymer. I keep them both simple, no need to have that extra stuff weigh you down.
