Yup, you can definitely reach out and touch a metal gong at 100 yards with 00 buckshot. Was just doing it last Friday while test running my new Hawk 982 (which ran flawlessly if I may say so. Almost surprised me it ran so well). I was using some Melior 9 pellet 00 buck which was recently on sale at SGAmmo so I had bought 2 cases. I also shoot military full power, Winchester Ranger low recoil, PMC full power, Rio low power and Federal LE132 low power, depending on the gun I am shooting. All of the shotguns I have "rung the plate" with are HD type guns with barrels ranging from 18.5"-21", and most have no choke, so cylinder bore. Since you are not allowed to shoot buckshot at the torso target which is close in, when I am testing the gun/ammo combos with buckshot I generally aim at the 100 yard berm, where 1 or 2 8" plates reside. It is pretty much spray and pray since you are firing a short barreled gun with a bead (or at best a ghost-ring-and-post type) sight, but we get "dings" sometimes 35% of the time.

Federal Flitecontrol and Hornady Versatite wads work quite well for keeping things tight at 25 yards.

100 yards with slugs is also something I've been impressed with using Federal truball slugs.

I have wondered about those. Both of my shotguns (Rem 1100 and 870) have Mod chokes. I was under the impression you didn't want to shoot slugs through those?

Please don't take it as a "look at me, look at me" thing. I was just shocked it went as far as it did. Like I said, I only took two shots at the gong.

Thanks for all the great info, guys

My friends, I have done lots of reading. I might understand the 00 buck in other states of the Union but I don't understand it here in Ca, not for Deer?

Please explain? It seems like a fun round for Zombie's but not for Deer, not when we can shoot a .308 or .270 ...

Canucky, I was wrong. My 870 has a modified choke and the 1100 has an improved cylinder choke. I ordered up a few boxes of rifled slugs to try out in the 1100 and a case of 00 buck just to have laying around for the zombies.

Not many folks pursuing deer with buckshot in the west. There are some properties which restrict deer hunting to shotgun. Some folks only have a shotgun. In dense cover or other close encounters, buckshot is effective.

00 buck is way overkill for rabbits. Most people use #6 or #5 birdshot; I personally use #7.5 because I also hunt birds and it does the job just fine.

It's a lot easier using one load for everything I hunt with a shotgun; only other load I have is #4 buckshot for coyotes. I always keep five shells of #4 buck on me out in the field just in case.

To answer gofish's question as to why buckshot, In the Midwest and East coast where population densities are much higher deer hunting is frequently mandated with either buckshot or slugs. Most of IL for example is off limits to rifle hunting for deer. The folks who make these game laws apparently have never been in the woods as a 12 ga slug blows through the branches overhead like a cannonball (I have). I guess a shotgun slug isn't going to travel 800 yds like a .308 Winchester bullet but it is going to go a long, long, way before running out of steam

Definitely DO NOT use buckshot for clays, as the rounds will go a lot further than you can control especially shooting up in the air.

                          this!!

Most places will only up 6#shot for clays. at los altos they allow 4#shot as the biggest shot. the pellets will go further and could hurt somebody.

I use buck shots at my local indoor range, most indoor ranges will only allow buck and slugs because bird's shots spread too much and can damage their equipment and hit the targets in the next lane.

You should look for some buck shots that are on sale at your local or walmart store because they are fun too shoot.
