00 buck shot

Good afternoon,
I grew up shooting clays and trying to shoot Dove and Pheasant

I've always used bird shot. A few weeks ago my son and I did our normal BLM trip\shoot. I brought a couple boxes (10 shells) of high base 00 buck shot on this trip just to see what they could do. Not really enough to get a feel.

55 years, I have never shot 00 buck. Those things can reach out and touch somebody. I was shocked that I was hitting the 10" gong at 100 yards and seeing some pellets flying 25 yards past in the dirt.

Ok, enough blabber from me. My question is, What do you guys do with this stuff? Its not for birds, right? ....rabbits? I guess you could shoot clays with it?

Pretty tough to shoot clays because they don't spread as much as birdshot.

But generally, my understanding is that 00 Buckshot is for self-defense and larger game (deer? hence, "buck" shot).

Buckshot has two primary purposes. Hunting deer size game animals, and self defense. While there have been a number of long drawn out discussions on exactly which size of buckshot is best for each purpose, most folks would recommend 00 to #4 buck, depending on their experience or bias.

I don't hunt, so I use 00 and 01 strictly for HD (specifically LE132-00 and LE132-01).

It was federal "power shock"...I only took two shots at the gong, we only had ten rounds and of course my 12 year old son wanted to blow things up seeing how it was buck shot

I keep it loaded in my shotgun for 2 legged critter encounters.

The coolest thing I've ever seen using 00 buckshots for, is hunting boars from a helicopter:


It very devastating and quite effective even when fired from a moving helicopter.

00-buck will go through more layers of sheetrock than exists in any home I've ever seen. If you have neighbors, there are far better options.

If you look at a bird that has been shot, the pellets stop just a bid under the skin.

You would not want to ruin the meat by driving feathers into one side of the meat and driving the guts through the other side of the meat.

For the same reason birdshot does not work on big critters and thin skinned critters.

With a cylinder choke, typically buck shot opens up 1" per yard. So at 20 yards you will have a 20" +- pattern.


Years back during a 4 day shotgun class a student spotted a squirrel at around 100 yards. The instructor (member on the forum) called for a class volley.

Everyone started shooting at the squirel. The squirrel ran a zig zag pattern up the hill to his burror that was 25 yards away and made it there safely.

I am shocked that you hit a gong at 100 yards with 00 buck.


00 is good on people and dangerous game. When a cat is wounded in the brush in Africa, 00 is a good round to use.

Each pellet has enough mass to penetrate and had a fair amount of energy.

Most effective defensive rounds from any firearm will penetrate sheetrock.

I am shocked that you hit a gong at 100 yards with 00 buck.

I think it is a combination of the Federal Power Shok 00 buckshot, which is buffered (unlike cheaper ones that are not), and his shotgun and choke used. With the right combination you can produce some pretty tight pattern with 00 buckshots.

I shoot Fiocchi low recoil 00 buckshots (unbuffered) with a Benelli M2 Field Compact and a Benelli SuperSport (both 12 gauge) at Los Altos's 40 yards tin can range and can hit coke cans fairly well, and 1 gallon milk jugs are easy targets. I used Modified choke on both my shotguns.
