Trap Gun. Single or double barrel

Assuming I'm gonna shoot only singles. And handicap. Other than price is a single barrel high end gun a better choice than double barrel? Seems like most higher end guns give option. Or combo. Thx.

Do you think you would ever shoot a league in the future? I think most leagues shoot doubles but if its possible I would look for a combo if your set on a single barrel.

I'm not really set on anything. I don't know of anywhere to shoot double trap in San Diego. I'm just asking if there's a reason to have a single barrel instead of double.

No, and I don't want to sound like a dick, but if you have to ask then you shouldn't buy a single barrel trap gun.

        They're too specialized.

          By a double.

Later on you may want to try doubles. You can always shoot singles with a double but not vice a versa.

I would get a double too. There is always an 'if' in there....

'If' one barrel breaks a firing pin, you can still get by shooing the other barrel. This happens in competitions.

'If' you get good enough that you are winning competitions with your double, then possibly go for a single at that time as you will be better able to decide.

I agree that perhaps a single is too specialized for having as a primary shotgun and perhaps you will be better served getting a combo if price allows instead.

I believe that you can indeed shoot doubles at P2K if you request doing so and the rest of the squad is okay with it. I used to do it there often enough. Besides, you may want to try your hand at other clay games and most of them require at least two shots at times.

I'd rather you be a dick and just tell me what they are specialized for. Is it shooting handicap off the 27? I'm not gonna get one. I just was curious what top shooters use them for. And why higher end guns are sold as combos?

If you have been shooting trap for a while, and if you want to continue seriously then you should get a dedicated trap gun. I would go with a 34" single or a 34/30 or 34/32 combo (for doubles later on).
From your original post it sounds like you don't have very much experience shooting trap. In this case I would recommend a 30" or 32" O/U.
If you don't have much experience I would stay away from the high end trap guns (Krieghoff, Kolar, Perazzi) until you get more experience and know what a good gun should feel like. The higher end trap guns are well worth the money, if you can appreciate a better trigger feel, better barrel regulation, and fine wood. Lower end trap guns Beretta, Browning, and to a lesser extent CZ or SKB would be a better bet until you think that the attributes of a higher end gun will get you an extra 1/4 or 1/2 bird per round.
Whatever you decide make sure the gun fits. If you are buying new the higher end guns can be fit before the order is placed, so the stock and balance are matched to you. If you but used make sure the feel is right for you, and budget for an adjustable stock.

I've shot trap with both. Run 100 from the 16yd line with both.

I actually prefer the O/U to the SBT for singles & handicap. FWIW, I am currently at the 24yd line for HCP and AA for singles & doubles.

I love shooting doubles. In fact, last year was a rough year for me shooting ATA and the only events I shot were doubles.

I sold my SBT last year cause it just sat in the safe. I don't miss it.

Get a 32" O/U trap gun and have fun.

I have a single barrel. Remington 1100. Works fine, and never broke a firing pin.

                          Combo...

Gives you the best of both worlds. I am actually going to be upgrading to one before next season.

I would look for a used Browning BT99 single barrel trap gun for now. It's lighter than a O/U. I shot one years ago with a 34" barrel from the 27 yard line and did fine. I bought mine from B.C.Miroku in Japan in 1968 & still keep it.
