Jan 2014 BFG SoCal Skeet Clinic Scholarship

To encourage people to attend the (SoCal) skeet clinic and introduce new shooters to skeet(and clays in general), I hereby announce a continuation of BigFatGuy's awesome incentive program, as previously mentioned.
    THIS:

Award shall be based on a combination of firearms familiarity, age and experience. As this is an attempt to encourage newcomers to/those curious about the sport, preference shall be given towards minors and adults who have never fired a shotgun, much less any firearm.

    How to Apply:

    1. Attendee shall sign up for the 1/25/14 or 1/26/14 clinic and bring a guest (Nominee) who falls under the criteria listed above. Attendee shall PM RayPDA (Sponsor) with relevant information such as name, age, and whether or not Nominee has had any firearms experience, including, but not limited to, shotguns and the Clays sports. Submissions should be brief, honest, and concise.

    SIGN UP HERE:

Sponsor (RayPDA) will attend either the January 25, 2014, or January 26, 2014 clinic at Triple B Clays, and the selected Nominee shall receive:

    Two (2) rounds of skeet.

Two (2) boxes of shotgun shells, 12 gauge or 20 gauge. Exact loading shall be determined by Sponsor prior to the event.

Entry fee coverage ($20.00) for Coach Z.

Don has some shotguns available for use; however I will bring some of my own and the selected Nominee is welcome to try or use one of them, depending on Richard's and/or Don's recommendation.

    BONUS:

For his/her gallant efforts in bringing in a new shooter and for attending a Clinic:

The Attendee who's Nominee is selected shall be given an option of one of the following (depending on how the day goes and at the Sponsor's final discretion):

    a) A complimentary round of skeet on their key. Attendee must provide their own key.

    b) 50 targets on the sporting clays course. Attendee must shoot with Sponsor (off of Sponsor's key) following the completion of the Clinic. This offer shall be only valid for the day of the Clinic. Should the Selected Nominee wish to participate, Sponsor shall increase the targets by 50, for a total of 100 sporting clays targets. Both participants must provide their own ammunition.

Nominations will be accepted until a) one of the two dates listed above is full, or b) January 19, 2014, whichever comes first.

    Disclaimers & notes:

In the off chance that I somehow can't make it or something unusual happens -arrangements may have to be made contrary to the terms listed above.

It is expected that Nominee shall have fun and shall follow all safety and range procedures, and will be good students for Richard and Don, and that they'll come away from this all excited and addicted to the shooting sports.

BFG, Richard, et. al. - am I missing anything?

Hey Ray, just being curious on my part, why Skeet as an introduction to clay shooting? Wouldn't it be easier to start off with trap?

I've always thought trap is easier and hence I've started that way. I try sporting clays sometimes, but I usually get my butt handed to me when I do.

Beginning shooters tend to "Aim" their shotguns starting out. Shooting skeet trains them to look away from the barrel and eyes on the bird. If not done correctly a beginning shooter could develop a habit of aiming the shotgun, it is easier to hide the bad habit in Trap...

Awesome that you are continuing the BFG Scholarship (Shootership?)!

I will commit to fund a scholarship in March as well.

And the promise to become addicted shouldn't be hard for anyone to keep. I shot skeet for the first time in September, and now I have two shotguns, my wife got on for her birthday, and my son is getting one for Christmas! Talk about an addiction.

                  Well done, sir.

For anyone interested in shooting shotguns (IMO the most fun you can have with a firearm) there is (also IMO) no better introduction and training than the skeet clinic with Coach Z and Captain Dick. I went from almost zero familiarity to an ok shooter (once again IMO) almost exclusively with the help of this clinic.

I've never fired a shotgun before, or trap/skeet. I did just buy a Rem 870 express with 18" barrel, does that work at all for the clinic? From what I'm reading, some people say yes its fine, some people say you get weird looks...

Triple B Clays requires a minimum 20 inch barrel length. Your gun is not the proper tool for the job, but other than the barrel length , it would get you started.

As for weird looks, if you were a carpenter, do you think you would get weird looks on the job driving nails with a Crescent Wrench?
