No love for 20 gauge?

I've noticed that the Walmart that I frequent for shotgun ammo is always stocked full of clay shooting (#7.5 and #8) 20 gauge shells, including many cases of 100 shells.

12 gauge ammo is a hit or miss thing, sometimes they'll have plenty but other times you'll only see high brass loads and other heavier loads and/or larger shots (eg. #4 or #6) available.

Is 20 gauge so unpopular?

20 gauge is very popular, but generally speaking if you are into the clay games you'll get more mileage out of a 12 gauge. You can play informal skeet, trap, and sporting clays without being handicapped. Using a 20 gauge at trap or skeet, while fun, unnecessarily handicaps you (for the most part).

Me likes the 20ga for upland birds. The 12 is overkill at close range for dove, quail, and pheasant. Great for duck and turkey. -g

I was thinking of picking up a 20G for a little extra challenge(upland)...it's easy to destroy dove/quail with a 12g.

Translation - you need to be a better shot with a 20ga.

Years ago, a local hardware store went out of business. A buddy and I went in there, and the display of ammo still had a bunch. The manager sold us all of the 12, 20, and .22 bricks for a buck a box. I think we got 20 someodd cases plus the .22s.

The next week, I went to another of their stores in a nearby town that was closing also and bought all they had left - maybe 10 cases - same price.

I kept all the 20ga., part of the 12, half of the .22, and he took the rest. I bought a cheapo 20ga. shotgun for varmint control around here, and never looked back. Sweet gun, and teaches you to be a little more accurate.

Problem - at the local WalMart, 20ga. is plentiful, but more expensive. It's old stock at last year's prices, and the mgr. won't lower it until they buy replacements. Luckily I don't need any right now.

Thanks, I order my shotgun shells from laxammo.com who has very good deals and special sale going on tomorrow.

It is more convenient to pick up shells at the local Walmart though as the one close to my place is also where wife and I usually eat lunch and dinner. So far it is not that difficult to stock up on 12g birdshots for clay shooting but its just that I find it odd nobody seems to be buying the 20 gauge ones.

Having said that, the Walmart I frequent has those 12 gauge Winchester Universal Value Pack 100 shells, and Federal Value Pack 100 shells today. Picked up 4 boxes, should be enough for the shoot this Sunday.
