Opinion on Maverick 88??

How does a Maverick 88 compare to some of the Chinese made shotguns? Stevens or NEF??

Its essentially a mossberg 500, takes most of the moss accessories, depending on when made. I had one for 20 years and never had an issue. Dont know about the chinese shotguns but mossberg has been around a long time for a reason.

you'll have to pay a chunk of change to change the pump, since most handguards require a metal inner tube ($60-70) with action arms that's not included with the maverick (or the big 5 special guns with 2 barrels.)
The mav has the handguard and action arms integrated into one peice.

Found out the hardway when I bought a Hogue Stock and Forend kit. Luckily got the right metal tube from ebay for $21. I have a Mossberg 500 Combo from Big5

I think mavericks are assembled in the u.s with parts manufactured in mexico...id prefer that over made in china anyday....

I bought my dad a M88 for christmas and my brother bought one too, Both work fine, no malfunctions, the finish on them are pretty nice, like someone has mentioned up there the forearm is pinned to the action bars, if you're like me and like just a simple pump, isnt a problem

Also if you plan on putting on a pistol grip the trigger guard safety is much better then the thumb, too awkward to reach around the grip to turn it on/off on the receiver

I have had a Mav 88 for 13 years. I don't shoot it that much anymore but there was a time when it got fired regularly and between myself and friends, it has been fired thousands of times. I bought it for $190. Probably the best value and most fun of anything I have ever owned. I have only disassembled it once a few years ago and properly cleaned and lubed it. Not because of a problem but because I had some time to kill and felt bad for it lol. Never had an issue with it ever. Like said, if you put a pg stock on it, the safety is easier to actuate than a 500. Never cared about trying to upgrade the foreend. It's a harbor freight style 500. Plastic trigger and trigger guard and the action on mine is a little sloppy. This does not bother me. I love the thing and wouldn't trade it for the world. Small investment. It's a great shotgun. I have heard some of the early models had only 1 action bar on the pump. Mine has 2. I would definitely buy another.

To add to my last post, if you plan to shoot clays get the regular 5 shot Mav 88 with the long barrel. Reason being is that a friend of mine liked mine so he bought one for himself but got the "Security" model with a 20" barrel and 8 shot capacity. He wanted to get a clay barrel for it but with a longer mag tube than the standard model, the long barrels are hard to come by and expensive. Mine came with the 28" and I bought an 18.5" for the home for about $60. Last I heard, my friend had to pay a couple hundred for his long barrel which basically is the cost of the whole gun. If home defense only, get the Security model.

Have the field model for clays. It a Mossberg 500 essentially. I haven't cleaned it yet and 0 failures.

I have the older 88 with the single action arm. Works as advertised, lightweight.

No complaints.

It actually feels nice and solid and pretty smooth when you rack the action too, some of the stevens i have felt just felt cheap

I bought one and transferred it to my brother so I could get my Mossy 500 back that I 'loaned' him over 15 years ago... Comparing the two side by side the apparent differences were the safety location and the action arms pinned to the forend, other then that they're fairly similar in weight and feel.

I have had one for about 11 years, never a hiccup or issue. I got the 28 inch barrel for hunting (killed my first deer with it as well as many a squirrel and quail) and bought a 18.5 inch for HD. I dont shoot it all that much anymore but never doubt it will work if and or when needed
