Pretty much the only reason to reload these days is that you can make up loads that the factories don't load commercially.. I can save some money when loading for steel shot, bio degradable stuff that I have to use (I save $3/box for 12, $4/box for 20) for target loads.. otherwise it's more about tuning your load to your gun.. there isn't a lot of savings involved..
The reason you pay a bit more for STS's and AA's is due to the higher quality components that the factory puts into the shells.. Generally very hard target grade shot (5-6% Antimony lead shot), consistent patterns, consistent velocity, and an overall higher grade hull over the walmart 100 packs..
For anyone that is doing any sort of traveling to a match (Superstition mountain, 3-gun nationals, etc), when you usually only fire about 5 boxes of shells.. having your gun puke on cheap shells will ruin what would otherwise be a great trip (and where expenses add up) and can cost you match placement for jams and screw-ups.. The extra $2.50 a box is insurance that there will be fewer issues..
