Nice! I took mine skeet shooting (amazing, you CAN hit two birds with a pump!) with the long barrel, then leave the short barrel on it in the safe.

It's so great to have the long barrel for practical uses (if you hunt I guess) and skeet/trap. Then when you take it home it's impractical with the 28 inch barrel so ... swap it! Now it's handy again!

The first shotgun I ever shot was an 870. When I went to buy my first shotgun I foolishly bought a 887 Nitro Mag that broke after 16 rounds despite being told by many cal gunners that the 870 was a better shotgun. I sent that pos back to remington and had them replace it with an 870 super mag and have been happy ever since. Anyway a pump shotgun is a great choice for a first shotgun because of its simplicity and reliability.

Ok so I LOVE the action on the remington 870 vs mosberg. Only advantage I personally see is the awesome safety feature on the mossy.

            so far in my mind...

Saiga 12 is great but pricey. 870 is great but I like the older ones. IMO, get the 870 with both the 28" barrel and the 18.5" barrel. Can't beat it for the price.

I once pondered over the debate of 9mm vs. .40, then I was introduced to .38 super and 10mm and forgot all about it.

                  Remington 870, ftw!

I believe that the shotgun, when used properly, is the most versatile personal weapon system available. This, by virtue of the sheer multitude of projectiles it can fire, truly does make it a 'one shot fight stopper'.

For the record, I have successfully used nothing more than the bad-arse sound of it racking as a deterrent, in a situation where I otherwise would have likely needed to touch off rounds to achieve the same result.

On a personal aside, I have long believed that the clever genius who first figures out how to make the sound of a shotgun racking the slide into a doorbell will, in addition to making a bloody fortune, cause (overnight) the demise of the door to door salesman industry.

                  Truly a 'win-win'.

mossy has user serviceable ejector. if the Remington ejector gets busted you need to ship the gun back to the factory. some Remington's have had problems with rust. the mossy has 2 extractors (not sure if it makes a difference) and i find the mossy easier to load, the lifter on the 870 can pinch your finger if you are not careful.

                        Is the S12 CA legal?

It can be configured to be CA legal.

The flow charts answer the questions

To me the Magazine Lock would prevent it from being a defensive firearm.

The locks are slow and awkward.

When you have a malfunction, sometime you just need to drop the mag to clear the issue.

In general- a semi auto shotgun without a detachable mag can have either a pistol grip or a folding / collapse able stock. Not both

For HD stick with something that will allow ease of use

You are trying to compare two completely different beasts. Before you can start comparing 2 different shotgun models, you need to resolve the question of pump vs semi-auto first.

If you can't decide between semi-auto and pump, consider the Tristar TEC 12 as your first shotgun. You get to try out both semi-auto and pump in one shotgun.

I think the biggest question here is do you own other shotguns that fill the field and clay shooting roles? Because while Saigas can be brilliant tactical shotguns, they are kind of niche as range toys as they are rubbish at clay shooting so you're shooting slugs on the rifle range in most cases which is expensive. I'd assume they would work for hunting medium to large game with slugs or buckshot but I can't speak to how effective that would be.

As such if you don't have shotguns that fill the clay shooting/fowl hunting roles I'd go for the 870 instead of the Saiga as it fills those roles nicely due to a plethora of cheap barrels.

Why would anyone wants to confront possible armed intruders with a chamber empty firearm?

Do they also prefer carry an empty chamber handgun/AR, only then rack the slide/bolt in front of BGs?
