The Mossberg 500 is a good option.

Controls are easy to use, if any parts break they can be fixed at home, and they can be had in all three gauges for around the same price.
It isn't the size of your hallway howitzer,it's how you use it.

        Big 5 Mossberg

+1 on the Big 5 Mossberg 500 or for a little extra the two barrel Mossberg deal. In the long run you will buy more guns, you will still want to keep the Mossbergs, but maybe not the knock offs. Not to say the cheaper shotties won't do the job, just that they are not long term keepers. Well at least thats how I look at it. YMMV

With a price limit of $300 the "knock-offs" are the best deal to be fair. My Hawk knock-off is almost a better built 870. The only downside besides it being made in china is to add a different barrel you need a spacer. If you add the taxes and fees to the mosburgs your not looking at $300.

+1 on a big five run. Just look at their ads for a while, you'll find something decent for that money.

I think it really depends on what your purpose is for the shotgun. Home defense? Any of the above suggestions are good ones. Hunting or sporting clays? Maybe look at the used market. My son wanted a shotgun for clays as well as home defense. He ended up with a nice older semi auto that has served him well.

Just because you mentioned it, the TriStar seems to get pretty good reviews. JoeFrank was telling me he picked one up at turners for $299 and that it runs flawlessly.

Now if you're looking for a sporting gun instead, a simple mossberg 500 has always been my pick.

Turners $339.89 for an 870. Remington has a $30.00 rebate, so $309.89 after rebate.

                            nice

I think he's gonna get the combo... we talked earlier. It's the same price as the persuader they are selling. It's really a great deal I think that's the one thing everyone on this board actually agrees with LOFL.. The 3 day ad they had rocked. I saw almost every kind of deal they usually have except the Hawk. They did have the Steven's instead though. Anyone look or seen that rifle/Shotgun combo they had? I assume everyone got the 3 day sale flyer?

$300 mossberg 500 is a great gun and there is no import substitute for it. Ya you could save a bit on a clone but why bother when the real thing is so affordable and what roll mark would you rather look at MADE IN USA or Made in China/Turkey?
