    Which mossberg/Remington?

I currently have a 590a1, but thinking about selling it and get a basic 500/870 instead.

    - what are the cheapest model for 870/500 with a rifle sight, and what are the price ranges nowadays?

    - what model of two point tactical sling would you recommend on it?

    Thank you in advance.

Why would you get rid of a 590 to go for a 500 or 870?

What is your reasoning for this?

The 590 is superior to the 500 and 870, I don't see any good reason to downgrade.

      I'd take either. 500 or 870..

I prefer the 870 being it seems to have a slightly smoother action and better fit and finish IMO.

500s go for about $350. 870s about $450 and up depending on model and features. Again it depends on what you want in these shot guns. Best bang for the buck 500, better fit and finish 870. Prices are quoted via new before fees. Don't bother buying used being sellers around here are dunk and usually want MSRP or higher for used.

Not too big on slings so many someone else can hop in for that.

But I'd keep the 590 and buy one of the other 2. 590 is a better all around quality shotgun than the other 2 fit and finish wise. But they all do about the same thing.

While 590a1 is a better quality weapon, it is also much heavier than 500. Not very comfortable for me to use whole day.

I am just considering the options. My other one would switching to a 18.5 barrel to reduce weight.

Of the 3 the 590A1 is the best, I would see no reason to have a 500 and a 590, so I'd get a 870 or Nova.

Thank you guys for the input

Now, say, I keep my 590a1 but want to covert it to 18.5 inch(ghost ring sight) where can I get barrel and mag tube from? 590 parts are not on mossberg website.

I will open another thread for sling..

I've been adding options to my 870 and have found stuff all over for it. Got a barrel here in the marketplace, few things from my LGS, Amazon, Ebay and the Google. Just take your time like I have and search for the perfect options for your needs.

I have a 590A1 and a number of 870's. I really like the solid build and smooth action of my 590A1 and it is a keeper, but my go-to shotgun is still my good ol' 870 Express (Big 5 special) that I have used in all the trainings and have shot countless shells on it.

I recently bought a new 6+1 870 Tactical for around $400 (one piece magazine tube without magazine extension.) I use Viking Tactics VTAC Wide sling, front sling mount is Mesa Tactical Quick-Detach Sling Loop Magazine Cap, rear sling mount is Blackhawk Specops Gen II Recoil Reduction Stock (came with a built-in ambidextrous quick-detach sling swivel.) I like this setup, and it fits my need.

590a1's and 870's aren't really that much different in terms of weight. They both weigh about the same.

Are you serious? The 590a1 is a heavy tank. Load up a 590a1 and bench press it for a workout.

If you are looking for a new barrel for the 590, try brownells or midwayusa.

I think the 870 is always going to be smoother and better feeling. They have a two prong action bar compared to the singular one used in mossbergs. There's nothing wrong with the mossberg, its just all personal preference and my experience has been that all the mossbergs I have shot, it never came as smoother and well honed as a remington.

However, it is something that will be your decision in the end, and if you don't notice how much better the fit and finish is on an 870 then you don't really have to worry.

I have been using a vickers padded sling with the butt-adapter for an 870.

I'd stick with the Mossy side of things. The 870 has awkward positioning of the slide release IMO, and I've heard decent to bad things about the current 870 manufacturing runs, in terms of quality.

As much as I prefer the 870 over the Mossbergs since you already have a 590a1 I would just stick with that and make the barrel/mag tube modifications you are thinking of.

In the end you really don't gain anything by switching to an 870 or a standard 500 from the 590a1. You might even give up a little in a sense.

What are you trying on gain by switching to a 500? Are you looking or a hunting shotgun or just want one thing slightly lighter but want close to 590 ammo capacity? something like the persuader?

If you want a hunting shotgun you just need to get a shorter mag tube and a longer barrel. Barrel will run about 120 mag tube 25-30 and spring $5 sometimes you can find used barrels pretty cheap too.

If you want a persuader look I have a brand new in box Brownells mossberg high capacity kit with rifle sights installed I purchased right before I got a great deal on 590A1 barrel and mag tube. PM me if you are looking to do that. I'm looking to sell it.

I would keep the 590. I upgraded my 500 to all 590 parts. I would stick to a mossberg over a 870. Personal preference I owned both. I absolutely hate the safety on the trigger guard. Probably why I stopped. Using my stoeger m3000
