I use Hoppes and 0000 steel wool for my other shotguns that rust and it works great. I then wipe down with any decent oil (remoil most recently but clp or others work as well).

Just watch the Hoppes on the stock if its wood.

+1 son in law brought his Mossberg 500 over that had been stored in a vinyl case light surface rust here and there Hoppes & 0000 steel wool mixed everything.

How you store your 870 will help it stay normal or rusty.

The goldenrods for safes are great. They are just a small heater to keep air circulating. A glow rope or 15 watt night light near the floor will have a similar effect.

Wipe it down with a silicon impregnated cloth and store it away.
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

Mine rusted up on the receiver a bit a few years ago after some dove hunting. I've been carrying it around in very hot weather for a few days often by the receiver. Got lazy when I got home and didn't both cleaning it and just put it back in a soft case. Went to clean it about a month later and had some surface rust where my sweaty hands had been. It came right off but since then, I've made sure to wipe the gun down with CLP after use and that has seemed to do the trick.

I'm no expert, but I used Tetra grease all inside and out of my Shotgun and that kept the rust away for me.

No Eezox does not strip finish but it does soak into the metals and will need to be decreased if you want to apply a new finish.

Eezox does bleed out of my guns after a solid range trip or high heat after its been heavy coated a few times tho. If that's an issue for you it's not excessive but it does bleed out a little in places.

man I don't own a safe... However, valencia is pretty dry so I shouldn't worry too much. I always just store it in a soft case so I guess I will just wipe it down with ballistol and throw in a desiccant and hope that helps. Thanks guys! I appreciate it and I will throw up a picture of my baby once I get it this Monday

Be advised that soft cases or cases with foam padding hold moisture.

I guess it just depends if rust really bothers you. My 870 express is for for quail and skeet so I really don't care if its slightly rusty. The damn thing rusts if you even look at it. Might get it cerokoted some day but not really sure it's worth the cost. I can buy a new 870 for a little more than the actual cost of cerokote. Next time I will listen to the vets and just buy an old wingmaster. The quality is 100% higher. Might try rattle can in the mean time. I'll let you know how it works out.

If you store it in a soft case, you might look at getting a silicon impregnated sock and then place the gun into the sock and then into the case.

Or buying a $5 can of silicon spray from the automotive shop and self treating the inside of the case.

All my guns get wiped down with Mobile 1 before they go back in the safe. Never a spot of rust on anything. I think regular oil application penetrates the finish and protects. Particularly oil where you touch the finish. The salt in your sweat is a killer. That includes an 870 and an old Krag that's 117 years old. The first 110 of the Krag's life was in the backwoods of Northern Michigan and it looks like new.

Where I live it's pretty dry and I made the mistake of leaving my 870 express in a soft case. A few months later when I was throwing it in the safe I noticed the entire mag tube and extension had an orange tint to it. Rust!
