So what would you all say is the best semi-auto shotgun for under $1K? I would prefer it holds 8+1 or 7+1.

Is there a consensus on what type of SA is better? i.e. inertia, recoil, gas?

I hear a lot of good things about the FNSLP, if you look around gunbrokers , can be had for a shy over $700 for the 18inch barrel model.
I think it can be confirmed that an alien xenomorph is absolutely no match for good ole' Alabama black snake!

I would say the Remington 1100. I have two of them and they are reliable with 1 oz #7 shot for trap, and 00 buckshot and slugs for 3-gun. All I did was added a Choate magazine extension and a side saddle shell holder, and left the rest completely stock. I haven't shot any of the inertia or recoil operated shotguns, but I'm happy with what I have.

My Remington 11 (Browning A5 copy) works well enough off the shoulder with a nice full load. It was trimmed to 20" though, maybe the lighter weight has something to do with it..

it all depends what you want to use it for.

i personally like low weight, good sights, excellent accuracy, and speed. for that, the benellli m1 has been an excellent choice for me.

the slp will allow you to hang all sorts of crap on it. but it is heavy to begin with and eventually can get to be really heavy.

the mod11s and the a5s are nice. i have one that has been cut back to 18".

              A good used Benelli M1S90.
$850 seems to be a common price for them in nice condition.
If it has the full length magazine tube, it will hold 7+1+1 once you learn how to get the 9th round on the carrier.

You gotta love the $700.00 FNH SLP...
I'm just breaking mine in, the only issue I have is, right now she doesn't like the taste of low recoil ammo...

I'm keen on the Mossberg 930 SPX. Very similar in appearance to the SLP but priced at around $550 if you can find them. Mossberg can't keep up with demand for the SPX. Mossberg semis are typically not well-thought of, with the possible exception of the 9200A1 "Jungle Gun," but the 930/935 series has impressed a lot of people, including plenty of shotgun snobs.

The 930 SPX comes with a set of LPA ghost ring sights which is worth $200+ by itself and I believe is the same set that FN uses on the SLP. The 930 also has the traditional Mossberg tang-mounted safety, which is intuitive, quick, ambidextrous, and can be manipulated to both on/off without changing your shooting grip.

Anyway, seeing as how the SPX is nearly impossible to get right now, I'm eyeing those $720 SLPs on Gunbroker.

The shotgun would be used for home defense and if SHTF. I already have a mossberg 500, so the safety would be intuitive on the 930 spx.

I am looking for new guns only. I have been looking into the remmy 1100 and mossberg 930spx.

Did the guns and ammo review on the mossberg comparison vis-a-vis benelli M4 come out yet?

Honestly, I would just try and get your hands on one of the guns, get a feel for them, and just pick the one that fits you best, most of the semi's from the major manufactureres work pretty well when used properly. You might have some issues shooting low base ammo with some, but if it's for defense your not likely to be using low base anyways.

My friend Dave Lawver just showed me his Mossberg 930 and he is impressed with it.
This would not mean much until you realized that Dave Lawver is Daves Metal Works who produces all sorts of goodies for Benelli and Remington shotguns and owns them all.
He was shooting it at a match when he showed it to me.

It's the first Mossberg that I have ever handled that I would not be ashamed to own.

I have to agree with AR15 on Dave Lawver a stand up guy and great gunsmith.

BUT The one round on the carrier will not work on all Benellis. On the older ones yes but the newer ones need a bit of "tunning" for them to do that.

And yes Dave is so far happy with his 930 and has extension tubes for them and is trying to break his to find out what other parts they need or could use to enhance them.

Daves 930 started out at a 28" VR field gun he chopped down the barrel to around 21 or 22 inches with screw in chokes, and stuck on a mag tube. After about 600 rounds there isn't enough time on this gun for me to recommend it. But it is looking promising. The gun feels like it weighs less than a Remy 1100 but more than a Benelli.
Sorry this was kind of a hi jack.

At this time there isn't a semi I'd buy new for under a grand.

I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.
