Why not go the range, fire "X" amount of rounds and save the hulls? There is no weight to them, but they work. I have actual snap caps too but do not recall having problems with them, besides their weight.

Well due to the 870 design having only a single extractor, the shotgun requires you to cycle it with some authority or else the round could get hung up on the ejector port. Not sure how much force you pump the shotgun, but that maybe your issue.

Your 870 has a rough chamber.
Take some steel wool and polish it

Take it to the range with some cheap bulk ammo and see if you have any extraction failures.

If you do, hit that chamber with some steel wool.
I had this issue with a new barrel. Both snap caps and live ammo would jam (FTE). I took some steel wool around my dremel and had at it. Now it is rock solid. It sucked shooting trap and having to practically reach in there to yank it out.
