Mossberg 500 Wishlist

OK, I purchased a Mossberg 500 (20" bbl, 8 shot mag), and, as noted on another thread, we all go through the 10-day waiting period, doing some shopping for accessories that we are probably never going to buy. I am no exception.

This particular 500 is a home defense/ combat gun: It comes with the Mossberg three-rail fore end (polymer), a collapsible stock with the shell holder, and ghost ring sights. Eventually I would like to upgrade to better dressings. So far I like the ATI Talon 5-rail fore-end, the Mako angled forgrip + handstop (or the Magpul AFG) and the ATI Halo heatshield (mostly for looks).

So, as funds become available, are there other things you guys would suggest for putting onto a Mossberg 500? What experience have you had with after market parts? Which ones would you bet your life on? Which ones would you never use again? Anything besides lights and fore-grips that you guys would throw on, just for ****s-and-giggles?

eh, just save your money on ammo and go practice with it before you actually start putting on accessories. It may save you a few bucks in the end.

KISS principle applies to a HD shotgun. there are very few whistles and bells that will improve the performance of your shotgun. get to know your shotgun and consider new rims and tires after assessing your compatibility with it on the range.

if your only using it for home defense just get a flashlight. no need to go overboard with expensive stuff you dont need. spend the money on ammo and take it to the range.

the ATI heatsheild sucks, get one made by mossberg.

Buy a mesa tactical side saddle and a light, thats all you need

Congratulations and excellent choice! Keep it simple. I don't like devices on guns. There are too many things that can and will go wrong. As stated above, put your money into ammo and training. You will be amazed what you can do with a simple bead (AKA Caveman Red Dot) as the front sight. I went to training this past week and put three rounds of slug right into the center of a man sized target at 50 yards shooting off hand with a bead front sight (see attached photo).

One of the things I noticed during the two day training was the more devices people had on their guns, the more they fouled up. Screws came undone and parts flew off under fire. If you really need some devices on your gun, consider some locktite or be sure to tighten the screws frequently. A side saddle shotshell carrier would be an excellent addition.

I think a must have accessory is a good sling, either tactical or two point. I'm partial to a two point 1.25 inch leather sling. However, if you are keeping the gun for home defense, take off the sling when in that mode. If you use it in home defense, Murphy's Law says that sling will be caught on something.

Do yourself a real big favor and do the following:

1. To see how the gun patterns, shoot 00 buckshot from the following distances, 7, 15 and 25 yards.

2. To sight in your gun, shoot some rifled slugs into the target from 25 or 50 yards.

If you are getting good center mass hits, and can equate that to neutralizing a threat to your and/or your loved ones life, virtually all of those wounds are non survivable. Your assailant will be down for the count.

One final thing, when you shoot it, every once in awhile, make sure the magazine end cap is tight. Just reach forward and give it a twist.

Aside from looks, is there any real advantage to a heat shield on a shotgun? I've put 3-4 boxes of shells though mine with no appreciable heating of the barrel.

+1 , spare the aftermarket crap and buy ammo to train & practice with. My Mossberg 500 is bone stock.....except for the shell holder on the buttstock.

Yeah, I tried using front and rear pistol grips on my shotgun, and found that I prefer the feel of the stock pump and stock. I do wonder about the possible benefit of the new tactical recoil-absorbing stocks with springs in them. I do agree that a side saddle shell holder and maybe a shell-holder that wraps around the stock would be good. Always good to have extra ammo... i put slugs in my side-saddle, just in case you need to crack an engine block or blast through a cinder block wall or something...

It doesn't need all that I out on a tacstar 6 shot side saddle and called it a day, it did get in the way when I went out to blm land to shoot and Leo showed up and ran serial numbers, it covers the serial. He didn't care since there were no problems with my ar or two hand guns he said I'm sure it's good

Congrats, I would put money into ammo and shoot to gun and THEN see what you think you want.

I have a Blackhawk Knoxx recoil stock on my 500 and a Trijicon reflex red dot. Happy with the setup. I am a big fan of having a red dot on tactical shotguns because it aids in shooting slugs.
