I looked at the Mossberg Maverick. $229 at Big 5.

      Thoughts?

      Thank you.
Mossberg 500! Easy, reliable, lots of accessories, easy barrel changing (literally just unscrew), comes with two barrels (18 1/2 and longer one for hunting/trap). It is (IMO) the best shotgun bargain out there. I advise everyone to get one, especially as a first shotgun. You really just cant go wrong and the value is great.

Buy an 870 from Riflegear or from Atlantic Firearms.

That is the regular price they put it on sale quite often. I have seen it recently at $279. Just gotta wait for the sales.

I hope it goes that low again.. The big 5 in my area basically drops the prices by about $50 when things are on sale lately.. About a year ago they use to have really good sales.

The Mossberg combo is $340 in today's ad (regularly $400), price good through Saturday.

                    Avoid the 870 Express.
If you want an 870, find a used police 870.

Is there a difference between a tactical shotgun and a home defense shotgun?

Tactical shotguns (as opposed to hunting or clay shooting shotguns) make the best home defense shotguns. "Home Defense" is more a description of the application, not a type of designation for a type of shotgun.

They are usually shorter-barrelled (18-20in) for easier maneuverability in confined spaces (hallways inside the house), cylinder bore for a wider pattern, and non-reflective surfaces to help stay concealed in darkness (at night, in your home).

Hunting and clay shooting shotguns usually have longer barrel (24"+ in length), fancier finishes, have threaded barrels for chokes, and lower ammo capacity.

A hunting/clay shooting shotgun is better than no gun at all, but if you're gonna buy a shotgun for home defense, you may as well get one built for tactical use.

for shotguns i usually advise people to get a combo, i usually see mossberg 500's and Remington 870's out there. The combo comes with 2 barrrels, usually a 18 inch HD and a 28 inch field barrel. unless you want to spend the money on a dedicated HD and field shotgun this would be a great route.
My HD 870 pretty much never leaves the safe, with an 18 inch barrel its not much fun to shoot at the range and it is not allowed at the clay parks, but with the 28 inch barrel its the best of both worlds. i used it for trap, skeet, and sporting clays for a while, but after getting hooked on sporting clays and skeet, i did eventually get a semi auto. so just something to think about.

another budget HD shotgun to look at would be the Armscor Rock Island 12ga, its not the most beautiful thing, but i would put it higher on the list over the Maverick.

                              grab some popcorn and watch

                              Remington 870 youth 20 GA.

PS. I own a 870 12 GA. & love it. If I did it all over I would probably pick the platform that was already the way I want it. Remington has many to offer. I say this because your not going to get away without spending more money getting it the way you want.
Or if I saw an old 870 for cheap, I would build it up to what I wanted.
It's my opinion that older guns where made by craftsman not stamped out by computers.
                              They are more refined.
