    Looking for a shotgun....

Hello all.... I've been in the rifle and handgun screen for years and never got into shotguns. Looking to get a decent one that I can accessorize but keep it under $250 to start the process. Basically looking for a good start... Home defense and can be converted to tactical.

I looked at the Mossberg Maverick. $229 at Big 5.

    Thoughts?

    Thank you.

I have one. It definitely doesn't have the same finish as my Mossberg 500, but some of the parts are interchangeable.

The biggest downside to the Maverick is probably the fact it'll never be anything more than a "security" gun. With my 500 I can change out the barrels and add chokes, it can go from an HD tool to a hunting tool.

Thanks for the replies. I'm just looking for HD and if zombies arrive I can go tactical with collapsable stock and pistol grip. Downside is it isn't tapped for a rear sight/optic unless thee is a way.....????

I don't have that kind of cash to drop on a shotgun right now. $1000 is more than I got. I'm looking for something reliable that I can do what I mentioned above. Thanks.

My mossberg 500A is tapped for a scope mount. I like it a lot but I much prefer my 870. IMO, it is much nicer and I shoot a lot better with it.

Save a little more dough and get the Mossberg 500 combo pack. Comes with a short and long barrel. Go for HD or hunting for a fair price.

The bead sight on these is sufficient for shot loads and slug loads once you practice with the gun.

                  ^ This

Probably the most bang for your buck you'll get short of buying a used shotgun at a pawnshop.

Mossberg 500 has lots of after market stuff if that's what you're looking for.

Save a little money until your can go with the Remington or Mossberg. You will have a lot more choices with accessories. If you want a butt stock with pistol grip, go with the Remington due to safety placement.

Inexpensive used mossberg 500s and Remington 870s listed daily on gunbroker.com Millions of them out there. The good thing about buying a pump shotgun online, other than cosmetics, cracked stocks, and bore condition, they virtually never wear out, so the risk of getting a gun that does not function is pretty unlikely. Personally I would stick with a American made brand as you will likely own it for decades, and possibly in the family for generations, and other brands may come and go.
