    Just inherited.

The only shotty I've ever owned is a Mossberg 500. Recently my grandfather passed away and I was given a Revelation 300F. Here's what I know about it:

    It's probably made by Savage.
    It's 12 gauge.

Anyone have any thoughts on this thing. It's not in mint condition by any means, but it's been cased for 30 years or so. Thinking about putting new furniture possibly. Anyway, any comments are appreciated.

I wouldn't do anything to it except clean it and shoot it like once a year, give it to your grandson one day

        not an ithaca?

I only ask b/c of the dogs.. guessing their are two ducks on one side and only one duck on the other..

maybe this is a common thing on shotguns?

Don't sell or mess with it. Buy a gun sock and a hard case and put it in your closet. When you're 30-50 years old you'll appreciate the fact that you kept something that was your grandpas

Because it's hard to store something that is roughly the size of a short 2x4?

If you really don't want it sell it.

I have three of my granddads shotgun, a Fox SxS 12 made in 1913, Winchester MDL 40 12 ga skeet gun, & Winchester Mdl 12 in 16 ga, I've shot these as a kid (71) now, plan to pass them to my grandsons.
Yours I think was made by Mossberg for Western Auto, much like the JC Higgins brand for Sears.

I just wanted to know what people thought about this gun, I really am ignorant when it comes to hunting shotties.

It has sentimental value to me and for everyone in the family. But I also can't leave it out of my safe. These are my household rules. This thing is over 4 feet long, that's a lot of real estate.

Safe to say I'm not looking to sell it, just complaining about how big it is. I made a rookie mistake and bought a safe that only holds about 10 rifles thinking I'd never need more room. What I'll probably do is trade it with another family member for a smaller weapon such as the Colt M1917 revolver I was eyeballing.

I believe these were a Mossberg made shotgun, sold by Western Auto. There's probably not very much financial value to it, but as mentioned, the sentimental value years from now may be irreplaceable. You could always dissassemble it and store it.

I'd heard the Western Auto thing before, but someone was telling me Savage made it for Western Auto. Either way, it's a classic. I've also heard Springfield made some for WA as well.

I did some reading and found out if Savage did in fact make it there is a letter circled on the barrel (have to find it) that will correspond to what year it was made. Starting with A (1949). So I'll go home and see if I can find a letter on the barrel. Although the value of the gun itself in miniscule, I'd like to know as much about it as possible. Something to share with my kids, and so on. The only story I was told from my Grandfather about this gun was that it thwarted a home invasion when some burglars left it next to the front door and my grandfather came home and picked it up. I think they survived, or at least that's the version my grandfather told. He also owned a bar for a long time and it was used to keep people in line.

IIRC, the Revelation 300 is just a re-branded Mossberg 500 or 500A. All of the after-market goodies should fit it. It is something that came from your grandfather, and I would NOT sell it. You may not like it or have much use for it now, but your kids will appreciate the shotgun later. Remember, with family guns, you are not the owner. You are the caretaker for future generations. I have a couple guns that were handed down to me from my grandfather (still alive, but too old to use them) that I will hand off to my kids some day. There is something to be said for a shotgun that kept the family fed through the depression, and was the only shotgun he used for 70+ years. Think about what your grandfather may have done with his gun over the years.
