    Your Ideal Personal Defense Shell

I've always either had 00 or 000 buck in the Mossberg 500 I keep under my bed, but recently I 've had people telling me that I ought to use something like #4 buckshot instead. What do you use, and why? Do you stagger different shells in a certain order?

I have an 8 shot Remington 870. I load 3 shells as Federal 3 1/2 in. Vital Shok 18 pellet 00 Buckshot. The other five rounds before is Federal 2 3/4 in. Power Shok 8 pellet 000 Buckshot. I think I have enough. If five rounds of 000 and three rounds of 00 Buck along with four rounds of Speer Gold Dot .38 Special and three rounds of Speer Gold Dot .357 Magnum from my S&W 686+ is not enough, either the goblin is invincible (I give up) or my aim sucks (I deserve to die).

My Mossy 500; stays loaded with #00 is in the tube... 3 more #00 on the carrier... 2 slugs on the rear of carrier.

Bird shot is for birds. (there are reported cases of #4 bird being used on a perp. at 6' away; and the perp. shook it off)...

EDIT: Nevermind; saw #4 brain substituted #6 birdy! Regardless I still depend on #00 because...

... If I'm in a situation where I feel the need to fire at home - then I am firing because the perp. already took down my 120lb dog.

If I'm in a situation where I feel the need to fire; I don't want to hit once and do nothing. But then again; at home if I am firing it's because the perp. already took down my 120lb dog.

            #4 Buckshot isn't birdshot

#4 Buck is 0.240" diameter (21 pellets per ounce)
            #4 Birdshot is 0.129" diameter (135 pellets per ounce0

Double aught. Whats the point of using a shotgun if you're not going to unload on the perp like the hammer of thor.

                    LOL

i keep 6 hornady tap 00 in my favorite shotgun, it supplements my glock. i dont ever see myself using it because i dont think id ever be bumrushed and if i did, i have 5 mags of federal HST

truck shotgun is a norinco 870 copy, parkerized with ghost rings. it has 4 rounds of tap & 2 slugs on the buttstock loops and has a bag of slugs

i figure anything you need poking at a truck gun isnt going to be ten feet in front of you

i dont like a crazy mix of ammo, how the hell am i gonna remember whats in there when i am under stress, duress, and needed to defend against a banger

Is it legal to have a shotgun in a truck unlocked with ammo nearby?

I'm a fan of #1 buck. I use a 3" to make up for capacity. Too chicken to use 3.5"

Yes and review the open carry and transportion thread

I have 8 hornady tap 00 in my mossberg, 6 in the saddle, and 4 slugs on the sling. Plus i have a shotgun sling nearby that holds about 50 shells (40 00/10 slugs).
