Best Forend for Mossberg 500

Just recently picked up a Mossberg 500 and I'm trying to figure out what the best forend is? Looking to put a vertical grip and pistol grip on it too. Any recommendations?

Just got the SpecOps non recoil adjustable stock, comes with a nice foregrip. It's nicer/higher quality then I expected for $75 and works well.

Make sure which year model 500 you have as the newer 500s (forget when i started) don't have the ability to swap out forends. You'd have to buy a whole new assembly with the slide bars already assembled or an older slide from a 500.

I'll probably just be getting another Maverick 88 8 shot forend as it should be interchangeable. Just got to take them both apart and make sure it all works.

The stock one works just fine. Going with the vertical ones, or the "D" shaped ones, or the ones with a nylon loop that goes around your hand, or any other trendy, cool-looking fore ends is mostly a waste of time. You don't normally need any of that. And often it ends up getting in the way more than anything else. I have tried them all, and I went back to the regular fore end long ago. Try them if you like, but it the odds are that you won't end up using it long term. The only other one that seems to be remotely useful is the standard version that has a light attached to it.

The ones where you can't replace the forends are the big five specials. I believe it's the 500a not sure exactly. But mossbergs still come with interchangable forends as long as you don't get the budget line. I have an extra BRANd NEW never used spec ops non-recoil reducing or whater stocks. If your interested i can send you pictures.

Also beware of the forend pistol grips on shotguns, after breaking a few of them i ended up getting the mold pistol grip forend. the one where they srew in from the bottom for ar-15 will not work, they will break.

Got it, thanks for the advice everyone. Probably a good idea to look into this some more before I make any purchases or heavy modifications.

Not to be a dick or anything but all of you that said the forend cannot be removed are wrong.The newer moosbergs are a little trickier to remove but can be done. Theres a lot of videos on you tube that show you how. I put a hogue forend on my mossberg that I bought last year from big 5. Its a great forend I highly recomend it.

Did you buy the combo from big 5? Most have the maverick 88 forends.

Yea I bought in at big 5 why would it matter were I bought it from.That has nothing to do with it. All the newer mossbergs are a pain in the *** to get the forend off the tube assembly.

Bought a 500 persuader from big 5 a couple weeks ago. (50577) Asked the manager if it had any maverick parts and he ensured me "its all 500" and said the mavericks are well labeled so idk if most is the right word ....or I just got schmoozed haha

Good advice. I was given a knoxx stock and forend once. I kept the stock, but put the original forend back on. I have a 500 and 500a and have swapped out both a couple of times. Right now I have a cheap mako railed forend on my cruiser. The rail on the bottom is covered now, the only reason I kept over the original so far is I can have a light attached to the side.

The Maverick fore end and action tube are all one plastic assembly. The normal 500 action tube is steel and the grip slides over it and locks in place with a nut.

I know what he's asking. The tube assembly on the newer mossberg is very snug it looks like its all one piece but its not.The maverick 88 are one piece.The trick to seperating the forend from the tube assembly is to get a 1'' piece of pvc pipeand push against it.

My 500 forend /slide tube assembly is one piece and Mossberg confirmed that.

I just want to get another slide tube assembly like the one on my Maverick 8 shot right now and i'll be happy. Haven't been able to track it down yet.
