School me on shotguns

I recently had a very nice 870 with the dual barrel (18.5" and 28") setup. Loved the gun but shooting skeet/trap gets addicting and if like us you will start to pine for a more dedicated setup. I inherited a really special Mossberg 500 mariner so the 870 was sold and I'm on the hunt.

So why I'm posting this...buy a 870/500 for HD but plan on spending more once the clay/bird addiction starts to take hold...

Congrats, I think you made a good choice. I've seen some other good picks too: Remington 870 and Benelli Supernova.

yeah nothing beats a side by side. i think they are scarey looking then any tactical setup.

remington 870 wonderful shotgun. benelli supernova don't even know why benelli bothered making them, they feel cheap and well they are cheap. mossberg 500 ok gun but hate the placement of the safety. love my winchester 1300 defender with pistol grip. great gun.

But if you want a nice spread for home defense i been leaning towards an AOW like a serbu super shorty. any thoughts on that? i mean most encounters are going to be 10-15 feet at most if someone breaks into your house and you shoot them. should only need one or two 00 buck rounds to do the job.

Actually, that's one of the things I liked about the Mossberg. The top mounted safety is super comfortable and easy to reach for me

the only other thing I can recommend is to make sure you get something with a removable choke. Many defense shotguns have a fixed choke in either cylinder or improved cylinder bore. More than once I have used #4 bird shot with a full choke for animal control. Even if you don't need a full choke now why limit the potential of your shotgun.

I don't know what your talking about... My benelli Nova Pump is solid, more so than my mossberg 500.

I love benelli auto loaders. Solid gun. I just have had the curse of being stuck with benelli novas. They just don't feel right. Never liked the pump action.

On mossberg safety. If you dig it. Get a mossberg. It comes down to personal preference. I just not a fan of it. But I wouldn't mind a super shorty mossberg. But prefer a Remington 870.

OP needs good training asap.

The bird shot thing is FOS, at the very least. Might get someone killed by a bad guy at the very worst.

Name a reputable shotgun trainer who recommends birshot.

Penetration is sadly lacking.

OP, go back about 5 pages on this forum, read forward. You'll note once every week or 2 someone posts the bird shot thing and gets quickly owned. Bird shot is designed for things who don't wear clothes with skin like a turkey or chicken. It is NOT designed for self-defense unless birds are attacking.

Do your own research before you put your and maybe your family's life in jeopardy.

This is going to depend somewhat on what you consider birdshot. If you consider T to be birdshot, it's very different than if you're using #2 (or especially #8).
