my vote is for the 870 and use the rest of the money on ammo, and a light for it if its gonna be you HD gun

Having shot an 870 a 500 and a Beretta something, my 930 spx is my favorite. Light recoil and it shoots everything I've put through it, what's not to love.

930 SPX's with a pistol grip come is two models. Model number 85371 is the Black Water model. Model number 85370 is the other. Google these number's for pictures of the difference. One has the Black Water logo and XS sights. The other has Ghost Ring Sights. SPX is the way to go

They like the heavier loads to cycle correctly especially when new during break-in.

Mossberg 930 notes

I took it out of the box and started running Win 2&3/4 00 ran fine 40 rounds. Loaded some wally target loads and got 3 stovepipes in the next 25. *Next day got a FTE on a mixed load mag dump. *At that point I was wondering if this gun was reliable for HD.

Took it apart and the gack in the barrel and chamber was horrible. *Cleaned it all up. *Shiny barrel. *Clean chamber. *Cleaned and lubed the piston rings and gas chamber. *Back to the range. Ran a variety of ammo from Brenneke 3" and Hornady 300gr, tons of Win 00, started emptying boxes of Wally and she ran great. *Took it apart again and cleaned the heck out of it and then lubed the wear points. *Went to the range and loaded all kinds of rounds all mixed up and the dang gun just went bang every time. *Ready for HD! * The gun disassembles very easy and without tools unless you want to remove the trigger assembly, then a punch is needed to drive two pins. *The only problems I have had with my shotguns is when the chamber is neglected, gets all fouled up, heats up on firing, and glues the spent shell to the chamber and prevents extraction. *Even my 870 has had this happen a couple times. *These days I keep the chamber mirror-clean. *The 930 makes this an easy chore, in seconds I can have the barrel removed and start mopping and scrubbing with #9 and WD and be able to easily see progress when cleaning. *Another important point to pay attention to is keeping the front optical fiber sight clean for bright light transmission. *

Shooting impressions: *This gun is fun fun fun. *The sights are high enough above the barrel that I can overgrip by rotating my front hand without disturbing my sights, and keep muzzle rise down, it works great. * Fun to rotate the trigger hand up and grip the narrow and pull the trigger with the largest finger joint while pushing the rifle back into the shoulder wedge--time for a mag dump or two. *At 25 yards slugs were shooting 1-2" low out da box, easy fix, great accuracy for a short barrel. *The fugly buttstock is very shoulder friendly and only noticeable firing 3" heavy hitters. *The safety took some usage and cleaning/lubricating cycles to really develop a solid-feeling satisfying click. *The bolt release seemed awkward at first, but after some range time is second nature. *The trigger is simply awesome. *Short travel, light pull, quick reset, this trigger really shames a ton of other guns that are ruined by horrible triggers. *I bought both stocks and like them both, but need more range time to decide what to keep on permanently. *Dump a tube and watch the smoke curl from the handgaurd-delicious.

Home defense. *

That's what I bought the dang thing for, and I'm pretty confident it was a great choice. *I have broken my cardinal rule which I have followed successfully for decades, I never load a round into a chamber unless SHTF. *With the 930, I load a 3" 00 in the chamber for a little extra oomph right out of the gate and then a tube of 2&3/4" 00 high-velocity. *Hello! *103 .32cal balls travelling approximately 1500fps is just the welcome mat for the four armed guys who kick down my door in the first three or four seconds before my sense of hospitality really kicks in. *This rifle requires extra special attention to safety during HD since a round is chambered and once that safety is off, a swath of destruction is just an accidental touch, nay, even a deep inhale during cheekweld, away. *Handle with care, extreme care, the same kind of care when finding a lit pipe bomb in your car while visiting your wifes' methed-out pissed-off ex while she drops off the final papers. *Great trigger.

Planned mods:
I researched 'em all during the prison break. *In fact the purchase of the 930 was influenced by the knowledge of a decently hefty aftermarket support market. *After shooting 'bout 400 rounds of various varieties of 12ga through this fine rifle, I'd acknowledge that like so many of my technological interests, less is more........fun. *And certainly easier to insure perfect performance without having to remove barrel/mag clamps, lights, sling crap, after-market easy-strip handguard bolts, etc. *This gun naturally reinforces the kiss principle. *I was saving to buy a micropoint with a hi-rise as a top but forget that, spent it on high-velocity ammo instead and as fun as this gun is to shoot that ammo is disappearing faster than my wifes' credit card limit at a Macy's sale weekend. *If I buy any accessories my first thought is to find out if I can swap out barrels for a 26" or 28" for lazy (read no pump gun) days on the trap range.

Not to mention the sound of the bolt riding home is get-in-ma-belly tasty. *If you're into noises that is.
