bought my first 870 and 10/22 there. maybe 15 years ago . wish i had loaded up on FR8 at 99$ they used to have good deals on marlin levers. last time i went in there they had nothing but century arms import crap and other third world surplus rifles. a year or 2 ago they had Garands for like 999 what a joke they were nasty and nothing special

I'm not a huge fan of Big 5 but I do some business there. Here Is a service not many people are aware of. Big 5 will do a PPT for $35 7 days a week! All of the gun shops in my area charge way more than that and also require an appointment or only do them for a couple of hours on Sat. (Bunch of BS). Remember though, long guns only!

You are kidding, right? By law, they have to; as any gun shop must do for $35.00 during open hours. Any gun shop that does otherwise or charges more is breaking the law, so it is rare that a shop does not offer the same.

As much as I have heard of errors and issues with Big 5 employees getting 4473/DROS paperwork horribly wrong, no thanks.

And as noted, they don't do handguns, so how is that so great, or for the prior matter even a secret?

You guys are lucky that you are not in Southern California, from LA to San Diego, we have Turners, which goes on a weekly sale! Rifle gear that is very well stock up on Rifles and Ammo bros that also do weekly sales, if you do then you'll be buying handguns every month and rifles every week!

i swear im in that place 3 times a week . ammo sales new guns rainchecks and just to check out stuff . ive bought 3 guns from them in the past few months and from all different locations hahaha . anyone else feel my pain . largest firearms dealer on the west coast !

Pedestrian ultra-basic-models and/or sub-par brands at best. Ammo prices are absolutely horrible compared to so many other sources. The C&R stuff is Mosin, Mosin, and Mosin, with an occasional Century Arms K31 or M1 Carbine that look like they were pulled from a rusty parts bin or were used for sledge-hammers to mount tractor wheels.

Quality over quantity any day. Sorry, Big 5 just doesn't cut it in that regard, unless you just want a large gaggle of ho-hum, pseudo-performance lackluster blah. I suppose if I wanted 30 identical lowest-tier, base-model Mossberg 500 shotguns, yeah, Big 5 would be my first stop.

They do fill a necessary area and glad they sell the basic stuff for basic needs. It's great they are a gun supplier/seller at all. if I was not a gun enthusiast, sportsman, or shooter, and only needed a Mossy for home defense, yep, Big 5 would fit the bill.

But honestly when I saw the title of your thread, I thought it meant how junky the stuff is that is found at Big 5.

the staff of my local Big 5 are always courteous to me when i am in the guns/ammo department, so no complaints about the treatment i receive there.

Big 5 ammo prices are not competitive; even with discount sale coupons... there's no such thing as a screamin deal on ammo at Big 5.

the rifles i am interested in are overpriced and there is no layaway plan available at Big 5. my LGS beats them on both counts.

i do occasionally stop in and pick up a box of ammo; very convenient, in that my local Big 5 is just down the street from my home. i'd spend more, and more often... if their prices became better aligned with the other stores/shops in my neck of the woods.

No I am not kidding, I very seldom KID, if you knew me better you would know that I am a nabob of negitivity but that is a different matter.

The truth is that of the 2 local gun stores, 1 requires an appointment and the other ( Canyon Sports) only does it from noon to 1Pm on Sat and charges $100.
That place sucks and the employees are rude.

Is that illeagle? you say it is. Can I do anything about it? Yes!

Have to admit Big 5 does have deals on long guns, but they don't offer as much as other gun shops, of course. The only guns I would buy is all the mossbergs, and once I have bought every mossberg, I'm out of there. Ammo is expensive there too.

Forget doing your PPTs elsewhere. Call the DOJ. They'll have a thing or two to say about them charging that much. As I recall its an infraction that will get an FFL pulled.

It is illegal to charge more than $35 (25 DROS +10 transfer) assuming it is face to face not shipped there or out of state. My understanding is they can require that you request in writing to perform the PPT.

IMHO, they are poor businessmen and are losing out on many new customers who are not familiar with the good old boy mentality, but might become loyal customers if they took the time to harvest that relationship.

Here we have, ladies and gents, what is commonly referred to as a "brand whore".

I hear you. But if all you need is a basic hunting rifle for putting some pig or deer in the freezer, or a 10/22 for your boy, or a simple pump 12 gauge for the car trunk or bedroom closet, then Big5's selection is perfectly adequate for those kinds of needs.

And yeah, the ammo is priced too high, but I only buy that when it's on sale or when I get the rare coupon that is good for ammo.

Big5 is hardly a good place to buy guns. It sounds like you don't have any good gunstores in your area. My favorite place to buy guns is Rettings Culver City and Rifle Gear. Rettings has pretty much every pistol on the market and can special order any gun you can legally own. I ordered my Browning T Bolt there. Rifle Gear is where you go for all your "assault weapon" needs. I about busted a nut when I saw AUGs and F2000s on display.
