    shotgun "break in"?

Not sure if this is dumb question... is there a proper or recommended way to "break in" a shotgun?

I have Federal 00buck, Rio 00buck, Remington 000buck and winchester slugs and I just waiting for a free weekend to head out with the homies and shoot it for the first time.

    TIA

I followed the advice of Aippi, who is also a member here, from his website on breaking in my H&R Pardner Pump which is basically an 870 clone.

While 870 specific I am sure it would work for any shotgun.

Following the info in the link I have had no issues so far either in practice or during a training class I used it in.

shoot a few dozen rounds of skeet. The round used doesn't matter much, most of what wears in is the sliding parts, not the shooting parts.

I've written up my ongoing adventures as I learn to hunt.

Yes, you CAN fit a case of shotgun shells into a .50cal ammo can.

I think i found an optimal solution for ammo can labeling.

I made this target for the NRA's Marksman pistol test. I think it's a lot better than the paper plate they suggest.

aside from hand cycling the action a few hundred times on a new mossberg to smooth it up a bit, just clean it and take it shooting.

Breaking in a shotgun? If there is anything you do for a shotgun, just pattern it. Shotguns do not have tight tolerance barrels for accuracy like rifles.

Deep clean, oil and grease, hand cycle , shoot.

                    Break-in=Verify-function, RIGHT?

Verify the bloody-hell out of it!

I got the Pardner-Pump for my first smooth-bore. I lubed all the minor-Chineese-rust specks, deburred the magazine threads, took it out, and verified-function-to-hell-and-high-water.

I've just gave the shotgun a good clean and lube, then put 50-100 rounds of whatever ammo through it that was at hand.
Never had any problem so far?

IMO "breaking in" a shotgun is more a function of becoming familiar with your chosen weapons system than actually "seasoning" the barrel or action as one might do with a rifle. After actually READING the owners manual, then cleaning and lubing the gun...go shoot it, err I mean "break it in"
Experimenting with different loads is a form of breaking in and Patterning is a critical facet of successful shotgun shooting.
                        Enjoy your gun.
