      I could be wrong on this, but I believe that the HD versions of the 870 with the larger mag tube, do not fit the 28" barrels... The easiest route it to buy the field version, with the 28" vent rib, 5 round tube, and then pick up a 18" barrel with the 5 round clamp... And then you can pick up an extension from choate, Nordic components, or Dave metal works.

        I have a Mossberg 500 and a Maverick 88. I've had my M-500 for like 30 years. Both are great guns. We have two homes and keep one at each.

        But an 870 is the gold standard. If you have the $$ buy it. You can always pick up a M-88 on sale at Big 5 for 200 bucks. If I ever buy another shotgun it will probably be a Remington.
