    Looking into a 12 Gauge...

Hey guys, I'm looking into getting a 12 gauge shotgun of my own pretty soon here. I'm looking for something pretty multi-purpose for trap and skeet, hunting, and possibly home defense. Price is obviously a concern, but anything under $400 is great. Any information or input is greatly appriciated. Thanks guys.

Currently looking at the good ol' mossberg 500.

Better make sure it's unloaded first, 'orwise things can get messy.

I'm very comfortable with the 870, and it's served me well so far. It's a good tool.

For skeet, you'll want a semi or O/U. For trap, if you ever plan on shooting doubles, the same would apply. While there are some old semis out there under $400, I would plan on spending double that at least. In the mean time, an 870 or a 500 will get you started.

The 870 and the 500 were the two I was debating with myself over. Both pretty good records, but the 870 is a bit more. Worth it?

So worth it! both are great i will admit. But like i said its the swiss army knife of shotguns. Better put, its the AR15 of the shotgun world. unlimited aftermarket. I now own the 11-87 which is the auto version of the 870 so to speak. but a lot of aftermarket parts are interchangeable. Which i love!

The Big5 special 500 combo kit is the best way to go. An 870 with 2 barrels is going to cost you a lot more. I'm not bias. I own both. Well, I have an 870 in .410 but, I wouldn't get a 500 in .410.

Well thanks guys, I'm leaning further toward the 870 now, regardless of cost. The 500 will always be a good option in my book though. Is there different types of 870s I should be aware of?

I got my 870 express for $300 back in the day. Now years later i purchased a new takeoff 28in barrel for $100. I like this option because it came with a tube that hold 6 rounds.

I picked up an 870 recently. I think 870 versus 500 is like Fors versus Chevy or Honda versus Toyota...etc...etc...both are good...

The 500/590 have pretty much anything you will want available as aftermarket.

Either the 810 or 500/590 will serve you well.

870 are good guns but no better than mossberg. Only good thing is that they can get "tacticool" quicker than a mossberg.

I love shooting skeet with my 590.

I would suggest a 500 over the 590, as replacement barrels are more readily available and chokes can be more easily fit for trap/sporting clays.

I've written up my ongoing adventures as I learn to hunt.

Yes, you CAN fit a case of shotgun shells into a .50cal ammo can.

I think i found an optimal solution for ammo can labeling.

I made this target for the NRA's Marksman pistol test. I think it's a lot better than the paper plate they suggest.
