On the 870 can I make it be a tactical 18" and add a hunting barrel as well?

Yes barrels can be changed in minutes. That's one of the beautiful things about the 870

Yes sir. One of the easiest shotguns to switch over from tactical to hunting and vise versa IMO. Just about any configuration of the 870 sold can be done in under a minute. Same with 590/500s but they have an extra step or 2 and take a second longer for me but still about the same difficulty.

I think getting a used or new 500 would be a little cheaper and be what your looking for and save you the haste of finding a second barrel. I think all 500s come wih both hunting/tactical barrels. If not they do have a package fairly cheap.

Probably your best bet and not a bad shot gun honestly.

The reason I chose an 870 over 500/590 is smoothness of the action and location of safety switch. Its all preference. Go to a store and see which you like more. Buying something once that you're happy with is cheaper than having to sell and buy something else..make it your own choice and not someone else's

Check pawn shops and the used rack at gun stores. Otherwise buy a new 500 or 870. Like said before the Mossberg 500 Combos with 2 barrels are pretty tough to beat.

i am a fan of the older 870 Wingmaster.

whatever you choose to get... with a little patience and tenacity on your part, a good deal will present itself.

There are plenty of good used shotguns out there, but it's hard to beat the 870 for all around versatility. Once in a while an old double comes up here, and those are fun in the field for pheasants/upland. But if you need to shoot steel, something with a later barrel is a better choice. Better yet is an interchangeable choke.
