Would you trust this barrel?

Just bought a 2 3/4 to 3 1/2" mag 28" ribbed removable choke barrel for my 870 from eBay for $90 shipped but the thing is it has been bought from a estate sale that was burnt down..

So not sure exactly how much in the flame this was but it was in a fire the seller doesn't know too many details for all we know it was in a safe during the time or what have you but he said it had some dirt and he cleaned it off and it looks in good condition

Aippi told me meh probably pass but for $90 shipped on a chance to get a legit trap barrel I couldn't pass. But my cousin has been getting me worried on how much the integrity of the barrel could have changed due to the heat and all the ways we could try to test it.

My thoughts is do a visual inspection for any burrs, discoloration and disformaties and if it looks good chuck a couple 3" shells in it and if it holds up to the rope and string test then it should be able to handle 2 1/3 birdshot bulk shells no problem..


My question is would you guys trust it?

And what tests do you guys know of or would try to figure out integrity and why?

It is hard to say till you get it and can look over it for any damages, and you have a right idea on testing it from a distance with a pull string. You might get lucky and it will be fine and you will be fine shooting it.

Yea I think it should hold up no problem. I mean it's a stronger type barrel so I think if any this one should have a chance of surviving and as long as it didn't warp or anything the heat shouldn't have dines trying to the metal if cooled down slowly right?

I mean imnot metal expert but metals heat up all the time it's not like it's going to turn into glass because of some heat and it's now a completely different material it's still a solid chunk of steel right?

I think if anything maybe it could be warped or the finish was cooked off but other than that it should be in fine shape. Or else I doubt the seller would have the balls to try and sell a jacked barrel that would have obvious life threatening issues abduct here's eBay should be able to cover that no?

I know there was a no return policy but it did have buyer protection.

I don't know the way i see it is I guys can shoot guns to this point and be able to let it cool and do it all over again with rifles barrels.. Shooting a smooth bore shouldn't be a problem..





These videos are why I believe it should hold up but again I wont know for sure till I actually shoot it. But I have faith! Hopefully I don't blow my 870 appart doing so haha

You could think of it as a free heat treatment on the steel, right?

If the barrel is straight and true, the vent rib is 100% attached and true, and there is no obvious flame damage to the finish I'd not be too worried. Worst comes to worse take it to your friendly gunsmith for a check before you shoot it.

Haha yea I like that haha hopefully it's true.

And yea that's a good idea I'm going to find a decent smith to give me a word on it. Closest one ive seen is holds smithing and I've heard horrid stories about them.

Yea got a few eBay pics and looks decent. You can look close and see some light surface rust patches but I don't see anything major.

Yea that's what I'm thinking too and I figured he'd take a picture of obvious damage but everything looks decent. But you never know sometimes pictures can be deceiving. And either way good or not I'm going to try and string test at least 3 3"ers to be sure she can hold up.
