I haven't shot Remingtons for a long time so I can't tell a difference. But compared to a Benelli Nova, shells are extracted very firmly and the overall feel is very solid, rough in a good way. The butt pad is quite good and with a double row of holes takes out a lot of the blow. There is quite a bit of muzzle flash but it's due to the short barrel.

Disassembly is identical to that of an 870. Taken apart, each piece feels solid and of good quality. Not top of the line, precision quality, but good heavy-overbuilt quality. No sign of rust. The bolt is shiny smooth and no bur is visible. The barrel gets mirror-smooth 2 inches down till the end, it seems to be chrome plated. The parkerized coat is fairly thick.

If I'd use one word, it'd be "overbuilt".

havent shot mine either, but i just picked it up and removed plenty of cosmo goo.

beefy is the word for this gun. it just feels really substantial and stout. very smooth action and it feels as nice as my real 870. however, the finish seems tougher.

ghost rings are a nice touch too

You can get the socket Allen head screws to replace the flat head screws that hold the GRS assembly on at the home Depot or hardware store. They look nicer and will not loosen on you.

The thread size is Metric M4 pitch. You may need to grind down the length a little.

I agree they do feel like Military shotguns. That is what I like about them. Nice and stout. People, non Norinco 982 owners, have been calling these shotguns junk for years. When the fact is they are better made shotguns than the 870 Express Remington is producing.

I recently bought one of these less than 2 months ago to accompany my mossberg 500. It is very reliable and I have yet to have a FTF or a FTE with more than 600 rnds of birdshot and 150 of high brass stuff (00 and slugs). The GRS is what really sells because it allows me to have consistent shots down range with slugs.

I don't own one. I was tempted to buy one when they first had them a while ago. It's a good price, for something new and tuff. I'd buy one for collecting and HD. I'm sticking with remington but.....
This looks like a fun project,I might have to build it if I can find the same stock.

All things being equal I'll spend a few more dollars and get a gun made in the USA.

If the 1100 and 11-87 both of which I've owned were close to being as good as a Benelli I'd still own them.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.

I would like to note that since I wrote this review Remington has done some improvements to their Express shotguns. They now have a 18.5" heavier profile barrel, about (0.880") OD. The extra 1/2" allows 7+1 capacity with a after market tube extension that is even with the muzzle. The barrels are thicker so much so the speedfeed LE forends will not work unless you break out the dremel tool for a little modifying. They are also putting nicer stocks on them.

I still think the Norinco 982 is a better deal for the money because of the excellent set GRS sights and their reliability with all types of ammo.

Some Express are still having issues with the WalMart value packs.

Does anyone know if big 5 is still selling the Norinco 982? I have not seen it in the ad for a few months.

Seems like this 982 would be a good buy ... if I didn't already have an 18.5" Marine Magnum barrel for an 870. I've been shooting a 1957-era 870 for years, and I don't think I could go for anything else. The Benelli pump felt really strong as far as the action went, but the 870 is the Glock of shotguns, with all the aftermarket crap you can get for it.

You guys were saying (way back in January) that there's a Norinco model imported under a different name that can take 870 barrels. Which one is that? The link didn't work in the end.

The more I think about this, the more I want to just buy a Marine Magnum and be done with it.
From Sacramento, Calif. My wife gave me six slots for weapons. As of 3/23/10, I'm thinking: CZ 75 BD in 9 mm, Glock 19, a FS2000, a Springfield M1A (Standard), Marlin 336 in .30-30, and a CZ 452 bolt-action .22-caliber rifle.

If the barrel ring was in the same location as the 870 the 982 would accept 870 barrels. The bolts of the 982 shotguns will interchange with the 870

Here is a Canadian imported DA Grizzly Norinco made short barrel shotgun beside an 870. It is the same shotgun as the 982 but the Barrel ring on the Grizzly is in the same location as the 870. The barrel and bolt will interchange the 870. Too bad the shotguns are not legal in the US. This picture was borrowed from another forum.

I love mine, except the damn rear sight is somewhere in the Mojave desert. Locktite the screw!

I suggest that anyone who owns a 982 should replace three screws with socket screws: the two screws that hold the rear Ghost ring on and the elevation set screw. The size is Metric M4. Most hardware stores carry them. It is hard to get a good torque on the slot screws.
