Which Mossberg 500 Model?

Mine was stiff at first, but after working the action and putting some rounds through it, it's smoothed out a lot.

Downside is they're a bit more expensive and heavy...

If I were to get another one, I would either get another 870 tactical, or a new Rock Island Armory M5.



I forgot who they copied, but it was a solid one either way. I just like the way the blinged out nickel one looks. It also has "the shoulder thing that goes up" on it. Also has a speedfeed stock, and a jeweled bolt which just looks cool.

I say go to your local Big5 or local gun shop that carries them. (FYI) Good deals could be had here too on a used model. Shoulder all shotguns you have considered and take into consideration how you like their balance/weight, feature placements (safety, slide release, loading mech, etc. etc.) as they are both different..My 2Cents on your HD Shotgun is the KISS principle. (re: door breacher) Don't overload it with useless accessories. You really think you're going to be breaching doors in your home. You're trying to protect yourself and family. You're locked into your safe place, not out trying to bust in. They will all go bang and are reliable. After that it's all about practice and having everything be second nature to you..Like putting on your pants

I just discovered that Raahauges in Norco is having there annual sports fair next weekend. I'll head out there and see what they have to try out.

This is what I ended up with. Remington 870 18.5" BBL extended mag tube to hold 8+1, and an $8.00 elastic shell holder. I also went with old wingmaster furniture to make it a bit heavier when practicing, and less evil looking in court. I run 7 rounds of 00 buck followed by the last one a slug.

Lots of good advice above. I choose to go with the Mossbergs over the Remington 870 for only 1 reason---the location of the safety. I liked the location on the Mossberg that is ambidextrous. In a stressful situation, I felt that this could make a difference.

The Mossberg is a bit lighter then the Remington 870 so you feel just a little more in recoil, but I don't think it is a significant difference.

Whatever you buy, get a variety of home defense ammo and shoot it. Find what feels good and gives you the results you want. Remember that you are probably not going to use that sucker farther then 40 feet. You DO HAVE TO AIM a shotgun. A miss with a 12gauge loaded with OO buck is as ineffective as a .22LR miss. (Though the sound might just scare the hell out of someone!)

I agree with Socalman. I don't think you can really go wrong with either of the two.
One thing to add is that the 870 is a lot simpler and easier to break down to clean then the 500/590. The 500/590 has a aluminum receiver and the 870 a steel receiver, if that makes any difference to ya.

Since this is for HD, IMO it would be best not to load it up with tact-i-cool/tact-i-crap. As already mentioned...keep it simple. Receiver saddle and ghost ring sites if possible. The rest is just more wasted money; more things to go wrong, more weight to carry and get in your way. If you want to make a cool looking wall hanger, then thats a different story.

Just an update. Went to Raahauges Sports Fair and was able to shoot both the Remington 870 Express Tactical and a Mossberg 590A1. I liked both very much, but I'm leaning towards the Remington. There was something more comfortable about shooting it. It almost seemed like a balance thing. I think I would be happy with either for sure.

Better built, and all the 500 aftermarket stuff fits it.

I would really reccomend getting the mossberg 500 combo at big5 i got mine for $340 after taxes and everything with a hunting and security barrel!
