Thought Experiment - Mossberg 990 Aftershock

Purchased my Aftershock a couple of weeks ago and took it to a friend's property last week to pattern and shoot the crap out of it. Shot 75 rounds of low recoil target #8s (1185 FPS) and it all cycled perfectly, not one hiccup. Felt recoil was less than out of a 12 gauge pump and like my 20 gauge Shockwave, I could fire it gripping it while aiming down the barrel. Shot three different 00 buckshot (Flite Control, Hornady Critical Defense, Federal Low Recoil) for a total of 25 rounds, all shot fine, FliteControl patterned at about 3" at 7 yds, same with the Hornady, the Federal grouping larger. At 15 yds, the patterns were approx. 2.5x larger. But God, the Hornady buck does pack a little bit more of a wallop at 1600 FPS.

This week, I got a Crimson Trace Rail Master green laser and attached it to a picatinny adapter on the M-Lok in front. Zeroed it in yesterday with low recoil slugs, and now I have a quick way of acquiring target while shooting from the hip.



Overall, I really like this gun. As one can imagine, extremely fun to shoot, and the takedown and clean/lube process was fairly easy, in fact easier than a 590 pump, IMO. My son wants the Shockwave so he'll get to keep it at his place.

If we were allowed the 14.5" barrel version of the Aftershock here in Commifornia, I'd think it would be a fun range toy. But since we are only allowed the 18" barrel version, I'm not too interested.

When I bought my 990, the gun shop guy (extremely nice guy) and I were talking about the 18" Aftershock, we were laughing who would want to buy it, and of course CA folks came up. His shop had two from the start, and both are unsold, yet they cannot keep the 14.5" one in stock for long. The 18" one makes zero sense from a marketing standpoint, especially if sold in free states such as Texas.

I don't see much reason for it here in Commifornia. So long and ungainly, why would anyone want that over just a regular shotgun?
