Rem 870 Wingmaster- convert for HD

I have a late 70's 12 ga Wingmaster that I've hunted with since I got it new.
I don't want to buy another shotgun for HD - can I get an 18" or 20" barrel for it? Can I use the original mag tube for it or do I have to get an extension?

    Yes, yes and yes.

An 18.5 or 20 barrel is readily available through many sources. Your mag tube is the same as today's 870's and you can add an extension is so desired.

You may have a little trouble finding a polished blue barrel to match your WM. Most are matte blue or parkerized.

All the parts are installed without permanent modifications to your gun, so anytime you want your old hunting buddy back just switch everything back to original.

EDIT: You can find an old plain Wingmaster barrel and have it cut down to 18.5" so it will be polished blue to match your receiver. The old plain barrels can be had for cheap.

They do make a 20" Wingmaster barrel
        consider getting one of those

Shotgun for HD, good choice. I have a Bandelero packed with: birdshot, "00" and slugs. Also keep a bag (man purse) with more shells, grab and run kinda thing.

BTW: I saw this guy on Youtube shooting slugs at 200 yds., open sights on a 12 gauge. Damn he was good.

Make sure it has the flex tab conversion. If not, then do not consider using it as a defense weapon untill you make this convesion.

I'm not interested in a matching finish barrel I just want to be able use it as a dual-purpose gun.

              What is a flex tab?

The flex tab is a newer design of the carrier or elevator that has a flexible tab cut out to allow you to clear a jam when a shell ends up under the bolt and jammed above the carrier. It's an easy upgrade.

Google it to see many discussions and fixes. AIPPI can offer better advice than me.

Thank you - I'll check it out.
I sure can shoot birds out of the air, but I'm a total Newb when it come to shotguns & HD.

The flex tab conversion from remington is 84.99. It started in 1981 so older remingtons don't have that.
