    trap shooting shotgun advice

Hello all. I'm getting into trap shooting and wanted to get your opinion on a quality shotgun. Something that I can use even as I get better at it. I don't want to end up buying another one in a year or two. Budget is from $800 - $1200.

    Many thanks in advance!

I would try and find a use Browning citori or a beretta 391 trap, or the new version. Can't remember for the life of me what the version that took over the 391 is called. There are a LOT of aftermarket for all of the above. I run a 391.

-just to check, are you talking trap specifically or clays (trap, skeet and sporting clays). Some people us "trap" to refer to all the clays sports. Trap guns tend to be pretty specific.

It's trap I believe. Bright orange small discs. Right?

Are you shooting from 5 stations and the birds are all coming from the same place in the center?

any thoughts on the semi-auto Remington 1100 Competition Synthetic?

This site has a two great brochures on trap and skeet: http://www.remington.com/pages/news-...downloads.aspx

If you are just getting into shooting clays, I would suggest you try all three. Most likely you want a more versatile shotgun that can be pressed into service for any of them. If you really get into trap specifically, then I consider a dedicated trap gun.

Most people gravitate to break-action over and unders for the clays sports. Two barrels, two chokes. However, a good over and under is expensive for many just starting out.

The 1100 would work fine. You just want to make sure it works for the lighter loads (probably does). If you are going to use a semi-auto, you want a shell catcher install so you don't throw shells and potentially damage the other shooter's guns.

as this point, I'd like to get a dedicated trap gun. Appreciate all your input fellas.

If you head down to these folks: http://www.coyoteclays.com/ , you can shoot all three sports: trap, skeet and sporting clays. I think they rent guns and have some pretty good instructors if you want some initial lessons. If you can round up a couple folks, you might want to look at their experience package and tell them you want to shoot all three.

Go to sunnyvale rod and gun and you will find a variety of shotguns people are using..

I love the over and unders. They are simple and easy to clean.
They are really fast too for the second shot.
I just love the way they look and you dont tend to hit your neighbor when you are shooting.

Bombardillo's suggestions are sound..for your budget you should be able to pickup a used citori or a nicely set up semi auto.

I shoot mostly with my $350.00 Remington 1100 that I bought from someone here on Calguns.
It has served me well and it has not let me down yet..
It has a 30inch barrel and interchangeable choke..

I have heard great things about the winchester SX series..

You can go to Coyote Valley in Morgan Hill and rent shotguns there too as AAshooter mentioned..

great advice. Thanks. I'm a member at SRGC so that's where I'll spending most of the time trap shooting. I have been told that O/U shotguns are the way to go.

Any suggestions on a good model? Looking for a new shotgun preferably.

                              What 12G rounds are good?
