I'm looking to buy my first shotgun and could use some help. Any thoughts on the Remington 870 Express Super Mag or any others that might be good all around starters?

Great thread, thanks! I'm also looking to buy my first shotgunComment

All depends on what u want to do with it. My first was a Remington 887 Nitro. I tried shooting skeet and failed miserably. Went right out and bought a Beretta A400 and still failed but not miserably. Hahahaha Semis are ALOT easier for second shots !Comment

Great link! I really appreciate it. I guess at this point I am just getting started. I participated in my first sporting clays tournament a few weeks ago and borrowed a pump Baretta. I was quite the challenge. I would like to find a good mix between skeet and HD. If that combo exists.Comment

I agree with others on here, Mossy 500 or a remington 870's are great first shotguns!Be the change that you wish to see in the world.Mahatma Gandhi

870
a 870 is a great starter shotgun for most any thing.....3 inch max though....3 1/2 out of a 870 will pound you into the mud.....semi-auto for 3 1/2 for geese but most 3 inch will be fine even for that.....i and most of my hunting friends dont use 3 1/2 even on geese.....and all of us have 3 1/2 semi autos.....hard on guns and us !!!....870,s are great with 2 3/4 shells for the clay sports.....have fun.....cheers....Comment

Anything over 2 and 3/4" is going to be a large hard hitting round anyway, usually a Magnum or some other "heavy load". You'll feel the recoil regardless, but semi-auto's are built to better manage the recoil due to rate of fire.a 870 is a great starter shotgun for most any thing.....3 inch max though....3 1/2 out of a 870 will pound you into the mud.....semi-auto for 3 1/2 for geese but most 3 inch will be fine even for that.....i and most of my hunting friends dont use 3 1/2 even on geese.....and all of us have 3 1/2 semi autos.....hard on guns and us !!!....870,s are great with 2 3/4 shells for the clay sports.....have fun.....cheers....
That said, my vote also goes towards Mossberg 500 or Remington 870. I have an 870. If you buy a model with an 18" or 20" inch barrel, you can always buy a 28" +/- long barrel for hunting needs. You can even find a shotgun combo that comes with both lengths. Though a standard "short" barrel will get the job done as well, but you'll loose accuracy over long distances. Though you can still hit a man sized target center mass with a slug at 100 yards +/-.
If the cost, capacity and durability of both of those shotguns is not enough for almost any need you have, take into account the number of after market parts and accessories and it only further increases their purpose and usefulness.ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕComment
