    870 Wingmaster barrel

As some of you might be aware I recently picked up an older Remington 870 Wingmaster

It is currently sporting a 28" non ribbed fixed modified choke barrel
This shotgun in its current life is going to be used for clays

Im thinking maybe down the road I would like to pick up a different barrel
I had my eyes set on a 30" ribbed barrel that can accept screw in chokes

On the used market what is typical pricing on a Wingmaster barrel?
    Is 30" a good length for a 870?
Any other suggestions or hints are welcomed

    Thank you for your help

imo 30s are too long. I personally like 28s for pumps and autos. A 30" barrel is equal in length to a 32" O/U. My personal 870 WM have a 26" skeet barrel. A good 28" barrel should be good for most clay sports out there. I bought my skeet barrel for $60-$80 (don't remember) on CGN. A screw choke barrel shoud be around 150ish.

$150 +/- would indeed be a fair used price for a ribbed barrel set up for Rem-Choke.

FWIW I tend to agree with bjl333. I've run both 870s and 1100s (essentially the same receiver length) with 30 inch barrels and they feel just a bit too long for me. I had the opportunity to fire an older Special Trap with (I was told) a 32 inch and it was like a log. The Remington guns I use for clays have no longer than 28 inch barrels on them as the length seems to work best for me.

Fit and feel are everything. It would probably be a good exercise for you, if you haven't done so already, to try and handle / shoot an 870 with a longer barrel just to be sure before you lay down the money.

most of the used ones i see are about $100, some for $80, a good deal would be like $65.

There's always a few 870 barrels on here - mostly trap barrels, but you never know:

I personally like the swing of a 30" on an 870...there's actually one on there for $125 (2 3/4" full choke vent rib)

                Thank you for those links
On that bottom link for the 30"er with a full choke
Is that gun a fixed full choke or can it accept thread in chokes?

Just remember - a "Wingmaster" is going to be the high polished blue so if you buy a used barrel it might not be so blue or so high polished depending on its use. Any 870 barrel will fit your gun, but if its a standard barrel its not going to be shiny and blue - just an option if you aren't picky about the look.

Rem-choke wasn't available until after 1986 - any barrel before that will be fixed choke.

                    kearns -

It's fixed - my buddy had his 30" fixed mod trap barrel off his 870TB threaded for trulock chokes , but you may be better off looking for one that is already threaded from the factory - those older full trap barrels are smoke poles on the trap field though

                      That is very correct
I am a person that appreciates form and function so I will be getting a Wingmaster barrel

I did just recently pick up this

Currently the plan is to go with a 28" vent rib Wingmaster barrel with Rem-choke
